So Long, Knots—These 11 Detanglers Leave Hair So Smooth, You Can Run Your Fingers Through It
The best mists, serums and leave-in conditioners to leave your hair free from knots.
If you have hair that’s prone to knots, then you will already know the challenge of brushing through strands that have decided to stage a full rebellion at the slightest hint of humidity or wind. And as for combing through freshly-washed hair only to hit a wall of tangles? It can genuinely be tear-inducing. For years, I resigned myself to the fact that it was just how my hair was, knots and all, until I discovered the power of a detangler. Yes, adding a leave-in conditioner or nourishing mist to my haircare routine has been a game-changer—taking wash days from a battle to genuine self-care.
Of course, not all detanglers are created equal, though. While I’ve found some gems that I rely on to help my hair brush glide through knots, the right formula depends on things like your texture, hair thickness and how much conditioning your hair needs. So I caught up with top hair stylists to break down exactly what to look for in the best detanglers for smoother, softer hair.
What Causes Knots and Tangles?
First up, as someone whose hair seems to tangle the second I’ve finished brushing it, I was keen to know what actually causes hair to knot in the first place. “The main cause is dryness and damage, as when the cuticle layer is rough or lifted, hairs catch on each other,” explains Neale Rodger, style director at STIL Salon. “Friction is a big one too, so anything from sleeping, scarves and coats, the wind or even over-brushing.” As for hair types, Rodger points out that fine hair, curly or coily textures, chemically-treated hair and longer lengths are all more prone to tangles, while split ends can be a big culprit too. “They literally hook onto neighbouring strands like Velcro and cause tangles,” says Rodger.
What to Look for in a Detangler
“Ideally, in a detangler you’re looking for smoothing and protection for the hair,” says Harry Johnson, hairstylist and director at Root Hair Salon. He suggests looking out for ingredients like argan oil, aloe vera and panthenol. Plus, finding the right texture is crucial. “Slip is key,” says Rodger. “Things like silicones give instant glide, and look out for plant oils, glycerin and conditioning polymers.” Plus, lots of great detanglers also contain heat protection or hair-strengthening ingredients, so you’re looking after your hair while minimising knots.
How to Use a Detangler
The best detanglers work best on damp or dry hair, but Johnson points out, not on straight-out-of-the-shower hair. “Brushing through hair when it’s soaking wet can actually cause hair breakage as the bonds are broken down, and it’s when your hair is at its weakest,” he explains. And you only need a little amount too—just a few sprays if it’s a mist or a coin-sized dollop if it’s a lotion—through the mid-lengths and ends.
“You can use detanglers on dry hair too for a refresh or to provide some pre-styling slip,” says Rodger. “And always work from the ends of your hair up when you’re brushing and be gentle. The product should help the hair glide apart rather than forcing the knots out,” he explains.

1. Living Proof Leave-In Conditioning Spray
This is a does-it-all detangler that not only smooths tangles and minimises knots, but it also protects hair against UV and heat damage. It’s beautifully lightweight, so it’s great if you have fine hair or a texture that gets weighed down by heavy creams, yet it manages to deliver a hefty dose of moisture that leaves hair soft and frizz-free. Plus, it smells as incredible as all of Living Proof’s products, so you’ll feel like you’ve just had a professional styling session.
Pros
- Lightweight
- Minimises frizz
Cons
- A bit pricier than other options
2. JVN Complete Conditioning Mist
This multitasking mist from JVN delivers serious slip and hydration in one spray. Infused with moisturising oils and silk-like proteins, it instantly detangles while also prepping hair for styling. Thick textures and curly or coily hair that are prone to knotting after washing will benefit most from its rich yet non-crunchy feel. And it works beautifully as a primer before curl creams or gels, too. Plus, I love using this on second or third day hair to revive my texture too.
Pros
- Moisturising
- Enhances texture
Cons
- Might be too heavy for very fine hair
3. Sol de Janeiro Milky Leave-In Conditioner
If your hair craves moisture post-shower, then this creamy leave-in delivers luxurious slip plus plenty of nourishment. And, of course, it's imbued with the brand's iconic signature scent, which basically means that your hair will smell like it's had a two-week holiday on a Brazilian beach. Sweet scent aside, the combination of brazil nut oil, cupuaçu butter and babaçu oil helps to boost elasticity and shine too.
Pros
- Smells amazing
- Boosts shine
Cons
- Scent might be too strong for some
4. Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Miracle Hair Rescue Spray
This rescue spray not only detangles but visibly repairs fragile strands. Formulated with repairing keratin and conditioning agents, it targets weak points and knots left behind after washing, making combing easier and gentler. The slip is noticeable without adding greasiness, and the formula helps reduce breakage during brushing, too. It’s especially effective for hair that’s been bleached, regularly heat-styled, or is otherwise stressed out, as it helps to smooth and strengthen over time.
Pros
- Great for damaged or bleached hair
- Strengthening ingredients
Cons
- It's a pricier option
5. Color Wow Dream Cocktail Kale-Infused Leave-In Treatment
This cult favourite uses sea kale extract and amino acids to deliver a unique blend of antioxidants and hydration without weight. Rodgers rates this for fine to medium strands that knot easily post-wash but can’t handle heavy creams. Not only does it provide silky slip that smooths tangles and preps hair for styling, but it also helps improve the strength of fragile hair that's prone to breakage and split ends. All without feeling like there is a ton of product in your hair.
Pros
- Lightweight
- Great for hair prone to breakage
Cons
- Better for fine hair
6. Kérastase Genesis Defense Thermique Treatment
This keratin-infused leave-in treatment is engineered for fragile hair that tends to tangle and snap easily. Plus, if you suffer from hair loss or lots of fallout, then it helps to tackle this too. The clever complex works to shield hair against heat damage while smoothing knots and strengthening weak spots, which makes blow-drying and further styling so much gentler on strands. Over time, it not only means your hair is more tangle-free but also smoother and more manageable overall.
Pros
- Protects against heat damage
- Strengthens hair
Cons
- Quite a rich texture
7. Davines Dede Hair Mist
This is Johnson's pick for a lightweight detangler that works well on both damp and dry hair and is a staple for both him and his clients. It boasts a refreshing, lightweight formula that delivers gentle detangling and soft conditioning without heaviness. Packed with rice proteins and moisturising agents, it smooths knots and adds movement, making it a great everyday option for those who don’t need a huge amount of hydration but want to make light work of tangles.
Pros
- Lovely fresh scent
- Untangles without weighing down
Cons
- Not as slippy or thick as others on the list
8. Amika The Wizard Detangling Primer
I'm a huge fan of Amika generally, as the products work so well for anyone with texture in their hair, and particularly for thicker or curly hair types. This detangler is a bit of a cult favourite thanks to the way that it delivers serious slip and a whole lot of conditioning—without relying on silicones, which not everyone enjoys using in their hair. Enriched with nourishing sea buckthorn, jojoba oil and panthenol, it boosts moisture and softness and allows your brush to simply glide through your strands post-wash. Plus, I personally adore the fruity infusion of the brand's signature scent.
Pros
- Great for frizz and flyaways
- Lots of slip for thick hair
Cons
- Quite strongly scented which not everyone will love
9. Oribe Run Through Detangling Primer
To call it a detangler is seriously underselling this multitasking primer, which actually minimises knots, protects against UV and heat damage, smooths and softens, seals split ends and conditions. An impressive list, yes, but one that's definitely needed to justify the price tag. It's infused with hibiscus oil and amla extract to lock in moisture and boost hydration, as well as Oribe's own complex, which protects hair from stress. It really does feel luxurious—it's utterly weightless and smells incredible—and the multi-benefit formula means that the splurge can be totally justified in my opinion.
Pros
- Multitasking formula
- Feels luxurious
Cons
- Hefty price tag
10. Kevin Murphy Un.Tangled Leave-In Conditioner
This botanical-rich leave-in will have you waving goodbye to every knot and tangle as the infusion of fruit extracts slips through points of tension and makes combing out wet hair utterly effortless. Whatever your hair type, if you're used to dealing with frizz, breakage and friction, then this conditioning formula will leave your strands softer, smoother and so much easier to brush out. Plus, once you've smoothed out every kink, your hair will feel stronger and more elasticised long-term thanks to the way it protects hair from heat damage.
Pros
- Offers heat protection
- Moisturising
Cons
- The pump can get a bit clogged so needs rinsing
11. Noughty Thirst Aid Detangling Spray
This affordable detangling spray packs a punch with aloe vera, pro-vitamin B5, and hydrating conditioners that smooth knots and boost softness. It’s lightweight yet effective and would be particularly ideal for fine to medium hair or anyone seeking a purse-friendly go-to. The scent is fresh and subtle, and the formula layers nicely with other styling products, too. And while it's not as rich as some premium options, it does a lovely job calming frizz and easing comb-through post-wash.
Pros
- Budget-friendly
- Non-greasy
Cons
- You need to use a fair few sprays of this
