My Dry Skin Had a Complicated Relationship With Foundation Until I Switched to *This* Formula
I'm never going back.

Oh, how I hate dry skin. I hate feeling the tightness, itchiness, and irritation that's often associated with it. Most of all, though, I hate how it makes my skin look. I'm talking about redness, dullness, and even flakiness. Add makeup to the mix, and instead of looking smooth and seamless, it looks patchy and textured.
While the right skincare routine is everything (I repeat: everything) when it comes to managing dry skin, it's also a good idea to look at the makeup products you use, and foundation is #1. The wrong ones settle into or sit atop dry skin, highlighting texture and basically screaming, "Hey, look! It's dry skin!" (They're the reason I say I have a "complicated" relationship with foundation.) Hydrating ones, though, make all the difference. They smooth, blur, and revive dry skin for a flawless, almost airbrushed finish.
Since I have a personal stake in finding the best foundations for dry skin. I left no stone unturned in my search. I reached out to two celebrity makeup artists, consulted hundreds of customer reviews, and tested formulas on my own (very dry) skin. At the end of it all, I created a master list, and I'm sharing it with you. Keep scrolling to see the unequivocal best foundations for dry skin.

The Best Foundations for Dry Skin
The Best Overall: Dior Forever Skin Glow Hydrating Foundation SPF 15
Size: 1 oz | Shades: 42 | Formula: Liquid | Coverage: Medium | Finish: Radiant
Both Henny and Guerra recommended this foundation. "Dior Forever Skin Glow will create a radiant skin-like glow and avoid flakiness. It also has great longevity," Henney says. Meanwhile, Guerra calls it his "personal favorite for dry-skin clients."
After trying it, I can see why. It has a lightweight, silky texture that sinks into my skin and disguises my dry patches, thanks to a formula that's 86% skincare ingredients (a combination of iris, hibiscus, and wild pansy extracts hydrate the skin). As for the finish? I only have one word: stunning. Think dewy, luminous, red carpet-level skin. Plus, it lasted all day long without needing a single touchup.
Pros: Hydrating, long-wearing, glow-boosting, SPF 15
Cons: Pricey
Customer review: "THIS IS THE BEST FOUNDATION EVER! I never write reviews, but I'm so happy with this foundation. It's perfect in every way."
Here, I'm wearing Dior's Forever Skin Glow Hydrating Foundation SPF 15 in shade 1CR. I love how natural and glowy it looks on my dry skin.
Best Affordable: Maybelline Fit Me Dewy + Smooth Foundation
Size: 1 oz | Shades: 24 | Formula: Liquid | Coverage: Medium | Finish: Radiant
After testing this foundation, I was honestly shocked that it comes from the drugstore and costs less than $10 per bottle. The finish is close to perfect. It's natural-looking, offering just the right buildable coverage with a luminous finish. I also love that it's fragrance-free and offers extra sun protection with SPF 18.
Pros: Hydrating, long-wearing, glow-boosting, SPF 18, affordable
Cons: The shade range isn't the best.
Customer review: "I bought this product not expecting much since it's so affordable, but it really exceeded my expectations! Wore it all day as a bridesmaid and it looked and felt great! It covered my discoloration and pimples well and I liked it better than other more expensive foundations I've purchased."
Best Full Coverage: Nars Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation
Size: 1 oz | Shades: 34 | Formula: Liquid | Coverage: Full | Finish: Natural
If you want a full-coverage foundation to disguise redness, breakouts, and other skin imperfections, but you have dry skin, then you know how difficult it can be to find one that...well, looks good. Some of them are the worst offenders when it comes to highlighting dryness and making the skin look cakey and textured. Not this one. Nars Natural Radiant Longwear Full Coverage Foundation looks flawless and lasts up to 16 hours, thanks to a fade-resistant formula.
Pros: Hydrating, long-wearing, fade-resistant, glow-boosting
Cons: Pricey.
Customer review: "I picked up this foundation hoping it would be a new favorite, and while I grabbed the wrong shade, I can tell the formula is really nice. It blends smoothly, feels lightweight on the skin, and gives a natural, even finish. It didn’t cling to dry spots or feel heavy, which I really appreciated. I’ll definitely be picking it up again — this time in the right color!"
Best Medium Coverage: Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Foundation
Size: 1 oz | Shades: 40 | Formula: Liquid | Coverage: Medium | Finish: Natural
It's difficult to overstate how much editors and makeup artists love this foundation. Even facialists love it, saying that it's suitable for all skin types, including dry ones, thanks to its 24-hour hydrating formula. As for the finish, it's elite and unrivaled. It's smooth, luminous, and generally flawless. "Armani luminous silk is lightweight and always a beautiful finish on dry skin," Henney says. "I like to add Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream ($190) under it for extra hydration."
Pros: Hydrating, long-wearing, glow-boosting, good for all skin types
Cons: None.
Customer review: "I'm in my 60's with dry mature skin. I've been wanting to purchase this for a while now and finally bit the bullet. I'm so happy I did. After using it for a couple of months, my sister now uses it, and I honestly get so many compliments on my skin. It's not heavy, but it makes your skin look its best without caking in fine lines and wrinkles, and I have them. I don't think I've ever purchased a foundation that LOVE this much."
Henney created this look on her client, Barbara Palvin, using Armani Beauty's Luminous Silk Foundation.
Best Light Coverage: Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Skin Tint Foundation
Size: 1. 58 oz | Shades: 20 | Formula: Liquid | Coverage: Light | Finish: Radiant
Guerra recommends this skin tint foundation hybrid that contains collagen peptides, ceramides, and squalane for dewy, hydrated skin. He says it's best if you want sheer coverage and a dewy finish. I agree. I think it's the best bet for no-makeup makeup or whenever you want light, fresh-looking coverage.
Pros: Hydrating, glow-boosting, natural-looking
Cons: None.
Customer review: "Love! Love! Love this tinted serum foundation. This is like a second skin. Goes on smooth and gives one a natural coverage and blends in with your skin beautifully. I use this with and without the Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder (another fantastic product in my makeup routine for my aging skin). Will definitely buy again and again!"
Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Medium Coverage Foundation With Fermented Arnica
Size: 1 oz | Shades: 51 | Formula: Liquid | Coverage: Medium | Finish: Natural
Guerra says this is the best option if you A) have dry skin and B) are looking for the most comprehensive shade range, especially when it comes to undertones. I can attest to how flawless this looks on the skin (it's one of my favorite foundations for a reason), and I love that it's formulated with fermented arnica to soothe redness or irritation.
Pros: Hydrating, long-wearing, redness-reducing, amazing shade range
Cons: None.
Customer review: "The holy grail for dry skin. Skin hasn't felt this smooth ever with other products. Doesn't irritate or break me out at all!! I have the most sensitive skin ever, and this foundation is amazing!!"
Saie Glowy Super Skin Lightweight Hydrobounce Serum Foundation
Size: 1 oz | Shades: 36 | Formula: Liquid | Coverage: Medium | Finish: Natural
With a skin-first formula that includes hyaluronic acid, rice bran peptides, and glycerin, this foundation is like a tall drink of water for dry skin. As for the finish, the brand says it provides medium coverage, but I would say it's closer to light coverage, almost like a skin tint. I love the finish, though. It's smooth, even, and oh-so-luminous.
Pros: Hydrating, glow-boosting
Cons: The formula might be too thin/watery for some people's preference.
Customer review: "So good! Made my skin look smooth and flawless. I love it! Definitely will be repurchasing!"
Makeup by Mario SurrealSkin Liquid Foundation
Size: 1 oz | Shades: 32 | Formula: Liquid | Coverage: Medium | Finish: Radiant
This foundation is from celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic's namesake brand (he's Kim Kardashian's long-time makeup artist). Guerra recommends it for two reasons. First, it has a luminous, dewy finish, which makes it a good option for people who have dry, dull skin. Second, thanks to ingredients like squalane and grapeseed oil, it delivers all-day hydration.
Pros: Hydrating, long-wearing, glow-boosting
Cons: None.
Customer review: "I have never gotten so many compliments on my skin until I started wearing this foundation! The luminous, skin-like finish is so beautiful, and the coverage is very buildable. This product definitely caters to normal to dry skin, but even at my oiliest, I find myself layering this foundation on top of a matifying primer! I have already finished my first bottle, and I will definitely be repurchasing."
What to Look For In a Foundation for Dry Skin
According to Henney and Guerra, the most important rule of thumb to follow when choosing a foundation for dry skin is to look for formulas that include hydrating ingredients. Think hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Moisturizing ingredients like plant oils are also beneficial. "Many makeup brands offer serum-infused foundations and concealers that incorporate extra skincare into your makeup routine," Guerra says.
Henney also recommends looking for dewy and radiant-finish liquid formulas, as these will usually work the best on dry skin. "Liquid textures are best with light to medium coverage," she says. " So, good guidelines to finding the right dry skin-friendly foundation are as follows: 1) choose a hydrating formula, 2) choose a radiant/dewy finish, and 3) opt for light to medium coverage.
How to Prep Dry Skin for Foundation
1. Cleanse
The importance of proper skin prep can't be overstated. Luckily, Guerra has all the tips and tricks you need to ensure a flawless-looking foundation. He recommends starting with a gentle cleanser. "Opt for a rich, milky texture that effectively removes impurities and excess oils without stripping your skin of its natural moisture," he says.
2. Exfoliate
"Exfoliating is essential to remove dead skin cells from the surface and leave a smoother, refined texture. However, for dry skin, it's crucial to choose a gentle exfoliant that won't cause irritation or make dryness worse." He recommends chemical exfoliants like AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) or BHAs (beta hydroxy acids). They exfoliate without the abrasive texture of physical scrubs. "Incorporate this into your skincare routine one to two times per week to maintain a fresh and smooth complexion without over-exfoliating."
3. Use a Hydrating Toner
Guerra always recommends reaching for a hydrating toner. "Look for toners with hydrating ingredients like rose water, aloe vera, or chamomile, which help soothe and prepare your skin for better product absorption," he says. "Gently pat the toner onto your skin using your hands or a soft cotton pad. Hydrated, prepped skin will better receive skincare products."
4. Moisturize
Guerra recommends choosing a serum and moisturizer specifically formulated for dry skin and applying it generously to your face, neck, and even your ears. "Look for products containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or natural oils like argan oil or jojoba oil."
5. Apply Sunscreen
"Don't forget to protect your skin from harmful UV rays even if it's not a sunny day," Guerra says. "Choose a lightweight, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreen not only shields your skin from UV damage but can also act as an additional layer of moisture."
6. Prime
Last but not least, Guerra recommends using a hydrating primer. He says doing so will create a smooth base, seal in moisture, and improve the longevity of your foundation. "Look for primers that contain moisturizing ingredients like glycerin," he says. "Dimethicone helps to lock in moisture and create a barrier between your skin and makeup. Apply a small amount of primer all over your face, focusing on areas prone to dryness or patchiness, such as the cheeks and forehead."
