We're Paying Attention to This Fashion Girl
It's no secret that the blogger world is becoming oversaturated. You see, the beauty of Instagram these days is that anyone can start a brand for themselves. If you want to be a food blogger, you can. If you want to dedicate your account to laugh-out-loud-worthy memes, you can do that too. Anyone can start these things, but succeeding at them? That takes skill and determination, two things up-and-coming fashion blogger Marta Lungo clearly has going for her.
We recently caught wind of Marta, also known as The Style Thesaurus, when she gracefully won our user-generated content contest for the chance to be featured in our annual Street Style Awards. Take a look at her cohesive Instagram feed (#aesthetic) and you'll see exactly why she caught our readers' attention. Besides looking great in quite literally every color in existence, she can pull off a variety of style types, ranging from more streetwear inspired to effortlessly elegant. That is just one of the many reasons we believe Marta is already gaining momentum as a blogger—she is relatable and real, something we could all use a little more of in this industry, wouldn't you say?
Speaking of real, Marta is about to get real with all of you right here. We had the opportunity to chat with her on how she got her start, what some of her struggles are, and the advice she would pass along to anyone dreaming of getting into the fashion blogging world themselves. Let's dive right in.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. What initially drew you to fashion?
I have always loved fashion. I used to be shy, and I suppose fashion allowed me to express myself without having to speak much. I have never been afraid to experiment, and I love that about me and I love the fact that I found a part of me through fashion.
How did The Style Thesaurus come about?
The purpose of opening an Instagram account was always to share fashion looks, but I didn’t have any photography experience or any idea of how to start. My Instagram was initially just called Marta, and I think with time I realized that if I wanted my page to look professional, I should at least learn the basics in photography and give my page a fashion-focused name. I self-taught the photography part, and in terms of the name, I didn’t have to think much. Two weeks later, I literally woke up and thought why not call it “the style thesaurus,” so yes, that’s how it all happened.
What are some of the biggest struggles when it comes to running a fashion account?
Standing out—there are so many of us out there. The second challenge I would probably say is consistency in posting and also attracting brands/audience who are genuinely interested in your art.
Describe your style in three words.
Modern, bold, inspiring.
Who are your some of your biggest fashion icons?
I love Maria Borges. She is doing such fantastic work in the fashion industry. I am really fascinated by her drive and strength. In the IG game, I really admire Chrissy Rutherford and Margaret Zhang. These ladies’ creativity is insane, and I have so much respect for them.
Where are some of your go-to stores to shop?
My page is very street style focused. The idea is to prove that anyone can look amazing in high-street clothing. I love high-street pieces in general, but my absolutely go-to stores are ASOS and Zara. I recently just discovered Rixo, and I am absolutely in love with their pieces.
What are three items in your closet that you wear on repeat?
Baker boy hat, midi pleated skirt, and I have a red puffer jacket that I absolutely love.
Any trends you’re loving at the moment? Any you’re hating?
Sock heel shoes are gorgeous, and I love statement earrings. I am not so keen on Crocs, corset belts, or clear boots.
If you could change/improve one thing about the fashion industry right now, what would it be?
More diversity. Diversity has always been an issue not just in the fashion industry but in other industries too, and it’s a shame how things are. There are some really talented people out there who could benefit from more diversity.
Any advice to people who are trying to start their own fashion IG or blog?
Fashion is meant to be fun, and any new starter should focus on having fun with fashion, take time to discover themselves, their style, and not focus so much on results. It’s a very competitive industry.
