My Mom and I Agree: These Chic 2021 Trends Are a Solid Bet
Full disclosure: My mom and I rarely agree when it comes to fashion. She's not nearly as interested as I am, so when a polarizing trend comes along she rarely jumps on board. We had more than our fair share of fights in my younger years (mostly because in high school I wanted to wear the lowest-rise jeans possible, which she was not wrong in saying no to), but now that I've grown up and my style has evolved we're past that. However, she doesn't always love a new trend I may be inclined to test out.
Her current style is laidback and comfortable, though I have raided her closet for pieces left over from the '70s and '80s and have scored some seriously cool finds, so she has an appreciation for certain trends even if she no longer wears them herself. Since I've been trying to be more mindful when thinking about shopping and trends, I thought it could be fun to ask my mom what upcoming 2021 trends she's into. From the fun color trend we both love to the denim style I never thought she'd approve of, these are the best 2021 trends for all ages, according to us.
1. BUBBLEGUM PINK
On Nnenna Echem: Loewe sunglasses, Stand Studio bag
Everyone could stand to have a bit more fun after a year like 2020, so injecting a cheeky color like bubblegum pink into your wardrobe is a great way to do so. My mom would probably go for this shade in a sweater or inject it into a fun pair of sneakers, while I like the idea of a punchy pink vintage-inspired coat or puffer.
On Nitsan Raiter: Charlotte Simone coat, Prada bag
2. BOLD PRINTS
On Claire Most: Capricorn Studios Top
In keeping with the fun theme, bold prints are a trend my mom and I are both in complete favor of. Whether on a top, dress, or pants, an eye-catching print really livens up your look. It will also make your Zoom calls infinitely more interesting.
On Jen Ceballos: Mother Denim sweatshirt, Brandy Melville sweatpants, Prada boots
3. RIPPED JEANS
On Aimee Song: L'Academie coat, Anine Bing jeans
Ripped jeans are one of those trends both my parents were not into when I was in high school (the focus of many fights), but as I've gotten older and styled them in a much different way, my mom has had a change of heart. The 2021 version of this trend feels super vintage and lived in, so she appreciates the authentic feel. We both agree that styling is key for these, so pairing them with more elevated pieces creates a nice balance.
On Natasha Ndlovu: Prada bag, Anine Bing jeans
4. LONG NECKLACES
On Chinda Phraph: Cinco necklace, Nalou earrings
My mom and I agree that a move towards longer necklace styles and lariats is a nice departure from the choker trend in recent years. Whether it's a single one worn alone or a few cascading layers, long necklaces lend a sophisticated feel to any look.
On Sabina Socol: Missoma necklace
Up next, if you're going to wear heels this winter, this is how you do it.
