Cold Girls, Assemble: These 8 Knitwear Trends Will Dominate 2022
Autumn is absolutely my favourite season to dress for. Between knee-high boots, woollen coats and leather separates, there's nothing I love more the curating outfits with layers, textures and silhouettes in mind. And it goes without saying that an integral part of my autumn wardrobe centres on knitwear.
As someone who spends much of their time complaining about how cold they are, over the years I've developed quite the extensive knitwear collection. Cable-knits are my weak spot. Though lately, I've found myself gravitating towards lots of striped styles (more on that in a moment). However, I'm always open to the idea of trying something new, which is where 2022's freshest knitwear trends come in.
I've scoured Instagram to discover which knitwear trends fashion people are already backing for the season ahead. It might surprise you that instead of clinging on to the hope of an extended summer, those in the know are firmly embracing all things woollen.
From the colour to bookmark to the cardigan update taking its cues from the runway, scroll on to see the eight autumn 2022 knitwear trends I spotted on my latest social media deep dive.
1. Vertical Stripes
Style Notes: Breton stripes have been cropping up on knitwear for the past few seasons, but in 2022, I've noticed more and more vertical iterations coming through.
A chic vest is a great layering option for autumn.
2. Knitted Buckets
Style Notes: Knitwear trends aren't solely reserved for jumpers and cardigans—other separates are just as likely to end up in my edit. Separates and accessories, such as the knitted bucket hats that I keep seeing Instagram's coolest girls wearing.
Checkerboard is a fashion-set favourite right now.
3. Blue Hues
Style Notes: Last winter, tangerine-coloured jumpers were all the rage. Now, however, for 2022, things are taking a cooler turn in blue tones, akin to Marianne's.
The sleeves on this knit flare subtly at the cuffs, creating a gorgeous silhouette.
Even traditional cable-knits have been given the cobalt treatment.
4. Homespun Embroidery
Style Notes: Floral embroidery on cardigans and jumpers isn't exactly new—in fact, it could be considered timeless—but I think it's fair to say that the detail hasn't been quite as prevalent over the last few years as it once was. However, if the runway and social media are anything to go by, cutesy floral motifs are going to dominate the knitwear scene in 2022.
The bows make this cardigan even more beautiful.
5. Split Hems
Style Notes: Often, the smallest details can make the biggest difference to wardrobe staples, and right now, split-hem knits are proving to be the jumper of choice for minimalist dressers. The open side vents create and enhance the oversized silhouette that is so of-the-moment.
This specific shade of tomato red is going to be huge for autumn.
6. Low-Back Dresses
Style Notes: 'Tis the season of knitted dresses. Continuing on summer's huge backless dress trend, there are countless low-back options to choose from.
An elegant option.
The long sleeves and knitted fabrication will help counter the chill.
This style has a panel across the back, making it the perfect style if you want to wear a bra.
7. Blending Scarves
Style Notes: Jumpers with scarf necklines started trending last year, after Ganni's cable-knit style swiftly sold out. Until more iterations drop, you can achieve the look by matching the colour of a scarf to your jumper.
This scarf is two-tone, meaning you can also achieve the look with a cream knit.
8. Maxi Cardigans
Style Notes: Maxi hemlines were one of the biggest trends on the A/W 22 runways by way of dresses and skirts, and it seems like cardigans are following suit.
Wear this just like the model—sans top and with wide-leg trousers.
