Surprise: This Could Soon Become the Biggest Clothing Retailer in the World
What's your go-to destination for shopping for clothes online? Well, if Amazon is in your regular rotation, you're onto something. Shoppers spent a collective $5.5 billion on clothes on the retail site last year. While you might associate the mega retailer with tech, books, toiletries, and everyday necessities, WWD reports that Amazon's apparel section is growing by leaps and bounds.
WWD tapped a research company called One Click Retail to analyze Amazon's sales, and it came up with a fascinating prediction. WWD explains, "If [Amazon] continues to grow at its current rate, One Click said it's 'likely to become the largest clothing seller in the U.S. by the end of 2018.' That title is held by Macy's Inc."
Plus, WWD explains that T-shirts, jeans, and underwear were the most popular categories. Only time will tell if that forecast will hold true, but we have a feeling Amazon has the means to make it happen. In the meantime, will you be buying your new spring fall from Amazon? Erin got her start as aBest Knockoff Luxury Clothing intern over 13 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of Associate Director of Fashion News (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
