Given fashion's massive contribution to climate change, sustainability is one of the most pressing issues the industry faces—something HRH the Crown Princess of Denmark is more than aware of. As patron of the annual Copenhagen Fashion Summit, the world's largest business event on sustainable fashion, the Danish royal is lending her powerful voice to the movement. "Profit cannot continue to be the primary measure of success," Princess Mary said at the summit this week. "Sustainable transformation must be a business imperative and a core priority."
Not only is she championing the cause with her words, but she's also doing it with her wardrobe. Surely, the princess has access to any designer label under the sun, but to deliver the welcome address on the first day of the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, she chose to wear a dress from H&M's Conscious Collection. The line uses a mix of recycled and organic materials, the latter of which is "grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers and contains no genetically modified organisms," per H&M's website. Specifically, Princess Mary chose the Silk Dress ($199), which boasts high-quality organic silk and just might be the chicest piece at the retailer right now.
On the second day of the summit, Princess Mary demonstrated another key to sustainability: finding pieces you can wear for years on end. She wore a white midi skirt and Valentino heels, both of which she has been re-wearing for several years. If a stylish royal can hold onto the same pieces for years, everyone else certainly can too. Excessive consumption and disposable fashion hamper the sustainability movement, so we love the princess's practical and relatable approach.
