Country Club 101: What to Wear to Master the Dress Code
Country clubs may occasionally get a bad rep for the exclusivity vibe that they carry. At mine, I was lucky to receive a very different experience. The club I grew up belonging to specialized in horseback riding, and I made many of my childhood friends in the swimming pools and on the tennis courts. Especially with horses involved, this meant denim and swimwear were okay at this establishment, but there were other clubs that we visited for swim meets and tennis matches that required quite the elevated dress code. Whether you're joining a country club yourself or visiting as someone's guest for a casual brunch, a round of golf, or an evening dinner, understanding the dress code is essential for dressing to impress in this exclusive environment.
Adhering to the dress code is about more than just following rules. It's the best way to be a gracious guest and honor the club's aesthetic. Whether you choose the crisp lines of a well-tailored blazer or the understated elegance of a classic A-line dress, there are many directions you could go in. Below, I've outlined some of the rules you should know before visiting a country club—take notes.
Tip #1: Understand That Each Club Has Different Rules
Some clubs would turn you away in shorts, but at others, you'd look silly wearing pants in the heat. Also, depending on the sport activities that a club offers, there may be more or less leniency with the dress code. Check the club's website or ask the person who invited you before going.
Tip #2: Opt for Classic and Timeless Pieces
This might not be the place to wear the season's latest trend or copy a runway look. The timeless and elegant dress you purchased for a friend's wedding a few years ago just might do the job here. This isn't an event that requires a brand-new wardrobe. Focus more on things that you've owned for a lifetime.
Tip #3: When in Doubt, It's Better to Be Overdressed Than Underdressed
Unless your friend invites you to their club for a game of tennis and you end up arriving in a dress and heels, you really can't go wrong with being a bit overdressed. Now, don't go overboard and give homecoming, but do opt for flats and a nice dress instead of workout clothes when you're unsure.
Shop country club attire:
This sweater would be a really good conversation starter over popovers.
As it cools down, this trench coat will come in handy for all things country club.
If the club you're going to has horseback riding, you're in the right place when you wear this shirt.
Sierra Mayhew was always destined to work in fashion, but she didn't know it at first. Growing up with no choice but to wear a rotation of school uniforms and activewear, her love for fashion really blossomed when she moved away for college and was able to finally define her very own personal style. Shortly thereafter, she interned at Elle magazine and instantly knew that editorial was for her. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, she worked for ShopBazaar, contributing regularly to Bazaar.com, and finally made her way toBest Knockoff Luxury Clothing , where she is an associate editor. When she’s not working, you can catch her always trying to catch a flight, trying Wholesale Replica Bag fitness craze in New York City, or exploring luxury vintage boutiques.
