It's True—Our Editors Are Skipping These 7 Autumn Trends

While no fashion editor can be completely unbiased—try as we may, our own tastes will always be prevalent—we spend much of our careers honing the ability to present all the trends, even the ones we wouldn't wear ourselves, without personal prejudice. However, I thought it would make for an interesting read to allow my colleagues to talk unfiltered about which trends they're loving this season and which they feel, for lack of a better word, are becoming a little dated.

It's worth noting, however, that the word dated holds slightly less influence in fashion circles than it does, . A big part of our jobs is unearthing new trends, so the idea of something being "new" is always fleeting. So even though it mightn't feel as fresh to us as it once did, chances are it's still the height of fashion in the shops and on the streets. And that's where it matters. If you like something or if a specific trend speaks to you, you should wear it regardless of what's "on-trend." Still, it never hurts to find out which trends the people who spot them for a living are excited about—and which ones they're not.

Skipping: Flannel Shackets

Wearing: Shearling Jackets

"Okay, so they aren't actually dated at all, but the flannel shackets we've seen a lot of over the past few seasons are just so not me that I'll be side-stepping them for autumn/winter in favour of something with a bit more polish. "Okay, okay, so I'm definitely not over ankle boots, and I fully intend on wearing the pairs I already own throughout the season. However, when it comes to buying a new pair of boots, the only kind I'm considering is a pair of knee-high boots. "It might be controversial, but I've never been a fan of skinny jeans. Thankfully for me, their comfier counterpart, leggings, are really having a moment. Along with the classic all-black pairs, which look great with oversized jumpers, blazers and knee-high boots, I also love the split-hem styles. "With the likes of Miu Miu and the Y2K aesthetic pioneering the return of pleated midi skirts, the hold they have had on the fashion industry these past few seasons has been undeniably strong. Though they do look cute on many people, I've never really been into them, as they're just not my style. On the flip side, longline skirts with a more formfitting, sleek design are what I'm lusting over this season. I love how they magically elongate my shorter frame!" — Remi Afolabi, video content creator

Wearing: Oversized Tailoring

"Move over, ankle-grazing trousers, cropped jackets or blazers that actually fit you—there's a new suit silhouette in town, and the idea is the bigger, the better. "As much as I admire the look of a polished outfit finished with an elegant cape, they always end up looking a little bit conservative on me. Autumn is my favourite season for dressing. I know I may be in the minority in saying that, but I love layering up and playing with textures, so I find the prospect of swapping a cape with a suede jacket far more exciting. I can wear it with everything from a white tee and jeans to a satin slip dress and heels, and who doesn't love that kind of versatility?" — Remy Farrell, shopping editor

"Many of my dresses are more oversized or have romantic silhouettes such as puff sleeves and full skirts. Although I love them, I'm keen to embrace the sleeker silhouettes that have walked off the runways and directly on to my Instagram feed. A departure from the body-con I associate with my youth, 2022's iteration is more refined with tank styles and bandeau necklines, modelled in thicker or knitted fabrications for a premium finish." — Maxine Eggenberger, assistant editor
