Hollywood's Most Iconic Pair of Shoes Are on Kickstarter—Find Out Why
They are perhaps the most iconic shoes in all of Hollywood history: Dorothy's red slippers worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. Now, they have their very own Kickstarter campaign.
As the Washington Post reported, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History is raising funds to restore the shoes to their former glory. The initiative, dubbed #KeepThemRuby, will support a scientific analysis of the "fragile and actively deteriorating" shoes, the materials needed for restoration, and the construction of a special climate-controlled display case.
"Conservators will work with scientists to understand how [the] materials have changed and the consequences of their natural breakdown," the Kickstarter explains. "Studying the effects of various light wavelengths, their response to changes in humidity and temperature, they will determine the best conditions for their preservation. Using this information, a special display case will be designed with an environment to help slow down further deterioration."

Erin got her start as aBest Knockoff Luxury Clothing intern over 13 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of Associate Director of Fashion News (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
