These 6 Trainers Will Go With All of Your Summer Dresses
Lily Allen was probably the first person I remember making me love the trainers and dress combo. For her Smile video, she was pictured in an array of prom-style dresses paired with chunky white sneakers. For what it's worth, the pink strappy dress layered with gold necklaces and finished off with gold hoops is still a look I love today, 14 years on. The impact of that look, I'd argue, is still felt today—with the frock and sneakers outfit remaining popular. Of course, it wouldn't be fashion without looking at the newest way the fashion crowd is wearing said trend.
Firstly, you have to consider the dress. From puffed-sleeves to oversized as well as polka dot looks, there are plenty of styles that are very current. Secondly, it's worth considering your accessories—do you opt for the same King Midas-levels of gold as Allen or keep it more simple? And how about a bag? Finally, and most importantly, what kind of sneakers do you want to wear with your dress? Helpfully, I've answered all the above questions, with the six outfits I've detailed below. Keep scrolling to find out more.
1. Old-School Running Shoes + Puff-Sleeve Dress
Style Notes: New Balance's vintage running sneakers have been making a comeback in 2020 and much like hyped-up trainers from previous years (Balenciaga, Sam Smiths), they're all over Instagram. Ellie Delphine of Slip into Style wears her New Balance with a pair of running socks and a puff-sleeved dress.

2. Chunky Sneakers + Floral Frock
Style Notes: A super pretty floral dress doesn't have to be saved for sandals and heels. Make it a more casual look by adding chunky trainers.

3. Simple White Trainers + Polka Dot Dress
Style Notes: The beauty about more simple canvas trainers means that you can wear them with anything in your wardrobe. I'm not just saying that—wear them with suits, jeans, shorts, midi skirts. They're the white shirt of shoes.

4. Iconic Trainers + Shirt Dress
Style Notes: There's no denying the pull of iconic sneakers such as the Nike Cortez. Pair with any frock you like but I think to really ensure the shoes get shown off, you want to keep it simple with a classic shirt dress.

5. Ecru Trainers + Black Dress
Style Notes: For minimalists, opt for off-white or ecru sneakers that are ideal for wearing with your latest black midi dress.

6. White Plimsols + Pink Dress
Style Notes: Make a super pretty pink dress feel less bold with the addition of some white plimsols.
