8 Spring Outfits Industry Insiders Are Wearing at Home
In a few weeks' time, we're set to hit the one year anniversary of the UK's first national lockdown. For many of us, that means we will have been working from home for an entire 12 months and while I call myself a fashion editor, I have to admit even I'm running out of interesting ideas for how to get dressed each morning.
In desperate need of fresh WFH outfit inspiration, I decided to turn to some of the most fashionable women in the industry, tapping into the minds (and wardrobes) of stylists and fashion buyers from brands including Harrods, Net-a-Porter, mytheresa.com, Browns and more. Having asked eight stylish women exactly what they're wearing at home, I discovered they all unanimously agree, there is just no substitute for comfort right now.
Whether it's throwing on a cosy knit, or wearing their favourite leggings on repeat, the common ground between each and every answer is that they're all prioritising clothes that offer a sense of ease (and often the bonus of a stretchy waistband). Of course, being the stylish individuals that they are, looking polished and put-together is still a must, so joggers and leggings are being elevated with the addition of shirting, mood-boosting jewellery and Zoom-ready bold lipsticks.
From Mytheresa's Tiffany Hsu to Harrods's Maria Milano, keep scrolling to see what these eight well-dressed women are wearing at home right now.
Tiffany Hsu, Fashion Buying Director at MyTheresa.com
''I'm wearing the famous cashmere bra and cardigan combo from Khaite, from the capsule collection we did on mytheresa.com. It is so comfortable. Paired with light denim and chunky jewellery from Tilly Sveaas and a bit of lipstick to be Zoom ready—and of course, there's always coffee on hand!''
Hollie Harding, Non-Apparel Buying Manager at Browns
"I cannot lie and tell you that I’ve been planning my daily outfits whilst I’ve been working from home. For me, it’s been a constant rotation of my favourite loungewear pieces as I truly believe comfort is king when you’re spending your days back-to-back on virtual buying appointments.
Today, I have mixed the bottom half of my favourite feather Sleeper Pyjama set with one of my all-time favourite sweaters from a tracksuit by the Frankie Shop. Whilst I’ve been keeping it somewhat low key, jewellery has been an important part of my lockdown wardrobe. Considering we are dressing from the waist up, I always make sure that I’ve layered my ears and neck with my most loved pieces; today I have on Marla Aaron, Anita Ko, Dana Rebecca and Roxanne First."
Alizé Demange, Fashion Stylist Creative Consultant
"My favourite colour is green and this has shown up loads in my choice of clothes and homeware lately. This jacket is from Fila (I know, plot twist) the colour and fit is very my vibe. I prioritise being comfortable at the moment, so on the rare occasion that I am not wearing sweats, these tie-dye jeans I got from Gnocchi Jeans are perfect because they have stretch to them. I'm wearing my staple everyday shoe, Nike Air Force 1, and statement gold jewellery from Image Gang."
Libby Page, Senior Market Editor at Net-a-Porter
"Comfort has been my main consideration when getting dressed since we have been WFH. Oversized knitwear like this one from Acne is incredibly easy and goes with almost everything in my wardrobe. When attempting denim I opt for low rise baggy styles which have a '90s connotation, that again scream comfort.
I have also invested in some pieces from Yvonne Leon, Mateo, Hermès and KHIRY as jewellery instantly lifts my mood and dresses up what can feel like an otherwise very casual outfit. Homewares have been key for me too, I’ve loved dressing my home and creating a calm working area for me to live in, so I invested in an Anissa Kermiche vase to lift my spirits!"
Caroline Maguire, Fashion Director at Shopbop
"I am all about Zoom-ready outfits right now! As a working mum, working from home with two kids is half the battle, so I need a quick look that’s equal parts cosy and elevated. I’ve been loving mixing and matching casual/comfy attire (like these amazing high-waisted Marissa Webb joggers) with the more 'dressed' styles (like this beautiful white poplin blouse from Kika Vargas) as a part of my wardrobe to keep my looks feeling fresh and new!"
Maria Milano, Head of Womenswear at Harrods
"It’s been really important for me, especially in this drawn-out lockdown, to make a clear differentiation between weekdays and weekends. Like everyone else, I have done my fair share of lounging in sweats (Les Tien—coming soon to Harrods.com), but these have firmly been relegated to weekends.
During the week, I prefer to feel put-together, not just for my myriad Zoom calls but for my own wellbeing—a reminder of how much I love a polished outfit. With my beloved blazers firmly on furlough, I have been relying on shirting from The Row, layered knitwear by Khaite, easy shirtdresses. I’ve even been known to pop on a Bottega Veneta shoe, although it’s most definitely a flat. The one area I have allowed myself maximum comfort is in the trouser department—I love Toteme’s high rise leggings and Mark Kenly Domino Tan’s fluid trousers. A slick of lipstick to (hopefully) detract from my winter pallor and some simple jewellery usually finishes off the look."
Aimée Croysdill, Celebrity Stylist
"Since discovering Girlfriend Collective leggings (made from recycled plastic) I haven’t wanted to take them off. They’re the perfect compressed and smoothing feeling without being restrictive. My boots have been the most worn winter item in my wardrobe! And make me feel cool whilst putting in zero effort. Then my top half makes me feel elevated like I’ve tried halfway to not wear loungewear! This Raey oversized shirt is the perfect layering item as it pops out the bottom of all my knitwear, making it easy to look slightly smarter. This ACNE jumper is my most complimented item, so I had to buy it in green too. I really regret not buying more colours as it’s the perfect oversized fit. It’s never become misshapen or worn with time. I’ve had this for three years and every autumn I yearn for the cold winter weather so I can wear this on repeat again."
Lucy Nguyen, Womenswear Buying Manager at Fenwick
"I'm spending lockdown hanging out with my dog Rocky in between meetings. He is one of the best perks of working from home. Being six months pregnant, comfort is key, so I am currently living in either a Sleeper lounge dress or their pyjamas. I will dress up for video calls with Soru Jewellery earrings, which always remind me of Italy. And now with spring just around the corner, I love a Staud kitten heel for pottering around the kitchen, tending to my plants and flowers."
