Raid the Archives: This Once-Dated Jewelry Item Is Now a Major 2024 Trend
With most of the leading items, silhouettes, and trends defining spring 2024 style, what's old is new again. We've been seeing a number of retro styles reemerging, including pretty A-line dresses and sophisticated east-west handbags, and now, there's one more were adding to the growing list of trends that are plucked right out of the 1950s. Brooches and pins are the items adorning the most of-the-moment outfits lately, and before you say anything, yes, we were also surprised to see them make a comeback.
This past fashion month, the street style scene was littered with creative ways to style one of these antique-style brooches, whether that meant fastening one to the lapel of a coat or blazer or using one to pin a cape or scarf in place. It was almost as if designers were reacting in real time to the revival—the fall/winter 2024 runways seemed to mirror what was happening just outside the shows. Many next-season collections feature cool pins and brooches, from Tory Burch to Miu Miu, and it's only confirmed that the once-dated jewelry-box item will continue to be an important one to know throughout the rest of the year.
There has been lots of chatter among our editors about brooches, and the niche accessory feels long overdue for a renaissance. See where sculptural pins and pretty brooches popped up in the fall/winter 2024 collections and how fashion people are already styling them in the wild. Then, shop our favorite versions currently available.
Elegant brooches were on full display at Erdem. Many of the outerwear looks on this runway featured the addition of a gold pin sculpted in the shape of a single tulip.
Pro tip: Secondhand and vintage sources like The RealReal are overflowing with designer pins for less.
On the street in New York, insiders mirrored the runways by opting to fasten a pretty pin to the lapel of their coats. This is a theme we saw repeated among the street style set to bring a little something extra to simple outerwear.
Tory Burch was another runway where we saw brooches pop up this season, but instead of styling them on the breast of a wool coat, the models matched their brooches to the color of a thin sweater for a monochromatic take.
Brooches vary in size, shape, and material, ranging from ornate crystal arrangements to floral designs, but we're partial to sculptural metal styles, as they lend a jewelry-like addition to classic tailoring.
At Miu Miu, many of the outerwear looks were enhanced by a cluster of crystal brooches that lend an eveningwear feel to everyday attire.
While the fall/winter 2024 runways seem to be unanimous in their assertion that you need to use a pin or brooch on your coats, the street style set is experimenting with alternative uses. Here, Editorialist deputy editor Danielle Naer brilliantly used a sculptural Agmes brooch to pin her scarf in place.
NY-based jewelry favorite Agmes is behind some of our favorite brooches at the moment.
Schiaparelli was one of the first brands to reintroduce us to the styling power of the jewelry piece. Brooches popped up in its collections from last year, and now, designer Daniel Roseberry is continuing the theme with his masterful use of jewelry.
In case you haven't been convinced to affix a cool pin to your blazer or coat, here's one more image that's sure to persuade you.
Take a cue from Rochas and focus all your styling attention on these pretty pins instead of traditional jewelry.
