The Special Guests You'll See Alongside These Time's Up Actresses

The red carpet at this year’s Golden Globe Awards looks much different than in previous years. Actresses across Hollywood are taking a stand against inequality and unfair treatment in the entertainment industry. By collectively wearing black dresses on the red carpet, these women are using their incredible visibility and the nationwide coverage that comes with this platform to speak up about what’s most important to them. Backed by A-list names, the Time’s Up movement is an initiative to incite real change in the entertainment industry—and, for that matter, every industry.

Further expressing these values, eight actresses affiliated with the Time’s Up movement will be bringing activists as their guests to the show. This move not only brings awareness to the powerful work they are doing, but it also shifts the conversation surrounding female actresses toward their work, beliefs, and values. Meryl Streep is bringing Ai-jen Poo.

Ai-jen Poo is the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance and a leader in organizing female immigrant workers.

Amy Poehler is bringing Saru Jayaraman.

The actress will be accompanied by Saru Jayaraman, founder of Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, an organization founded after 9/11 to aid displaced World Trade Center workers. Today her organization works to eliminate lower wages for tipped workers in the service industries.

Michelle Williams is bringing Tarana Burke.

Tarana Burke is a civil rights activist who created the #MeToo movement in 2006 to bring awareness to sexual assault survivors. Burke is also a co-founder of the youth organization Just Be, Inc., which focuses on the holistic well-being of girls of color.

Susan Sarandon is bringing Rosa Clemente.

Rosa Clemente is a community organizer, political commentator, Hip Hop activist, and the 2008 Green Party Vice-Presidential candidate.

Laura Dern is bringing Mónica Ramirez.

Founder of the Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, Mónica Ramirez works to end workplace sexual violence.

Emma Stone is bringing Billie Jean King.

The former tennis star has worked to found the Women’s Tennis Association, the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, and the Women’s Sports Foundation as well as co-founding World TeamTennis. King and Stone “have developed something of an offscreen friendship following Stone’s portrayal of the tennis legend in Battle of the Sexes” reports Glamour.

Emma Watson is bringing Marai Larasi.

Marai Larasi is the executive director of Imkaan, a black and minority ethnic (BME) women’s organization working to respond to and prevent violence against marginalized women and girls in Europe.

Shailene Woodley is bringing Calina Lawrence.

Calina Lawrence is an Indigenous activist who works to advocate for the Native Treaty Rights, the Mni Wiconi (Water is Life) movement led by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and the #NoLNG253 movement, led by the Puyallup Tribe.
