The 5 Most Surprising Items Celebs Have Ever Worn to the Airport
Everyone has their own approach to airport dressing. Some people swear by sweatpants and sneakers, while others prefer to be a bit more dressed up en route to their destination. But celebrity airport style is an entirely different beast. Faced with paparazzi flashbulbs, many celebrities choose to ignore practicality and dress to the nines at the airport, resulting in some seriously surprising travel looks.
Take, for instance, celebrities' penchant for anything-but-easy footwear, including sky-high stilettos and over-the-knee boots. Can you imagine trying to subtly slip off the unwieldy boots while sitting in coach? I can't help but picture them spilling into the aisle and tripping up a flight attendant. Scroll down to see the surprising pieces Rihanna, Victoria Beckham, Ashley Graham, and others have worn to the airport, and shop slightly more sensible options.
Mini Bags
I'm sorry—am I the only one who fills her tote bag to the absolute brim while traveling? I couldn't even fathom only carrying a mini bag to the airport. Where's your laptop? Your snacks? Your wallet, magazines, travel pillow, hand sanitizer, face wipes, sleep mask, and moisturizer? Don't tell me they all fit in that tiny bag, girl.
On Barbara Palvin: Alberta Ferretti sweater; Karl Lagerfeld bag
On Charli XCX: Adidas jacket; Comme des Garçons Girl Bag
More Practical for Traveling: Tote Bags
Sky-High Heels
It goes without saying that stilettos aren't the most practical or comfortable shoes to be wearing while traipsing through the airport, but who are we to judge?
On Doutzen Kroes: Loewe bag
On Rihanna: Stuart Weitzman heels
On Victoria Beckham: Victoria Beckham coat and pants
On Kate Moss: J Brand jeans
On Blake Lively: Burberry trench coat and pants
Easier to Wear: Block Heels
Over-the-Knee Boots
When choosing airport shoes, I usually stick to simple, compact shoes that I can slip on and off for security and while on the flight. Over-the-knee boots definitely don't fit into this category, as they're quite cumbersome and take up a lot of room. I'm all for the trend, but perhaps I'll skip out on wearing them while traveling.
On Chrissy Teigen: Chanel bag
On Rosie Huntington-Whiteley: Saint Laurent bag
Easier to Wear: Ankle Boots
Leather Pants
Stretchiness is your friend while traveling, and leather pants aren't exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think of forgiving fabrics. Scroll down to see how celebs have dared to wear leather pants at the airport.
On Adriana Lima: Fendi sweatshirt
On Miranda Kerr: Ray-Ban sunglasses
Easier to Wear: Leggings
Sheer Tops
I don't know about you, but my travel outfits always need to be comfortable and cozy. Nothing about a sheer top screams "cozy"—think of the draftiness!—but we certainly give these ladies props for being confident enough to walk through LAX with their lingerie exposed.
On Ashley Graham: Adidas sneakers
On Kim Kardashian West: Stuart Weitzman heels
On Chrissy Teigen: Janessa Leone hat
Cozier for Traveling: T-Shirts

Erin got her start as aBest Knockoff Luxury Clothing intern over 13 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of Associate Director of Fashion News (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
