Our Editors Are Proposing a Temporary Ban on These 7 Trends

The arrival of a new season typically signals a fresh set of trends to try out and a batch of older trends to let go. This spring, our editors are test-driving new pieces that span from '90s-esque strappy sandals to pastel-hued trench coats all the way to baroque pearl earrings. There's something for every type of personal style, whether you consider yourself a true blue minimalist or skew toward a more bohemian aesthetic. In other words, the shopping below is akin to a fashion playground. That being said, there also happens to be a list of trends we're pressing pause on for the moment. A temporary ban, if you will. If you're curious to find out which seven pieces we won't be wearing again anytime soon, scroll down to hear from our editors (and find out what they'll be wearing instead).

Banning: Leather Trench Coats

Try Instead: White "Shacket"

"With summer approaching (well, eventually), I think it's time to put away the black leather trench coats that were so popular earlier this year. Instead, I'm investing in a more seasonally appropriate white cotton shacket." — Allyson Payer

Banning: Neon

Try Instead: Big Blazers

"I'm putting a hold on the neon trend. I found that when it first started to bubble, I was too scared to try it, and that hasn't changed now that spring has finally rolled around. Instead, I'm leaning into big spring blazers as my transitional jacket of choice. I find that they can make any dress or pair of jeans look instantly cooler." — Lauren Eggersten

Banning: Tall Socks

Try Instead: Strappy and Sporty Sandals

"I've recently noticed a sudden slew of influencers styling knee-high socks with all different types of shoes and shorts or skirts. While they seem to be able to pull it off, I definitely couldn't, so I'm going to have to do a hard pass on that one. Instead, I'll just let some of spring shoe trends like strappy, barely there heels, and sporty sandals do the talking in my outfits." — Nicole Eshaghpour

Banning: Tiny Sunglasses

Try Instead: Oversize Sunglasses

"I'm officially ready to retire my tiny sunglasses. (Mindy Kaling was onto something). I'll be replacing them with oversize sunnies so I can conceal my under-eye bags in style! I'm particularly loving the shield styles that are everywhere right now." — Judith Jones

Banning: Chunky Dad Sneakers

Try Instead: Steroid Sandals

"I'm ready to let the super-chunky white 'dad' sneaker go. I do love the boldness of an 'I'm here to be noticed' shoe, though; I'll just be getting my kicks (see what I did there?) with Teva-meets-Birkenstock-on-steroids sandals." — Kat Collings

Banning: Coin Jewelry

Try Instead: Pearls

"I'm pressing pause on coin necklaces right now. Instead, I'm adding in pearl jewelry—especially imperfect, baroque pearls that exude character." — Kristen Nichols

Banning: Duster Coats

Try Instead: Spring Trenches

"I'm holding off on duster coats for the moment because I can't stop obsessing over spring trench coats. This cheery yellow one from Staud is my current favorite." — Erin Fitzpatrick
