Expect to Spot These 6 Outerwear Trends Everywhere in 2023
A classic wool coat will get you far in the winter, no matter what year it is. It's the timeless choice for a reason, after all. Slipping one on feels comfortable, but it'll never satisfy your sartorial cravings quite like a coat trend plucked from the runway, the streets outside them, or one of Instagram's finest dressers' collections. Simply put, trends, especially ones that involve outerwear, keep our wardrobes feeling exciting, even when the weather does everything to bring us down. And 2023's exterior offerings are among the most stimulating yet.
From the minds of Saint Laurent's, Khaite's, and Loewe's most senior designers come the 2023 outerwear trends that are set to dominate the remainder of winter. Padded bomber jackets like the ones that debuted at the latter's fall/winter 2022 show in Paris are already making the rounds among celebrities, while shearling-collared leather takes from Catherine Holstein's NY-based brand have gained followers like Laura Harrier and French influencer Camille Charrière. For more outerwear trends to keep an eye out for this season, keep scrolling.
It took about five minutes from the time celebrities and influencers began sporting Khaite's leather bomber jacket fit with a shearling collar for every brand on the planet to start manufacturing similar takes, thus turning the pilot-inspired silhouette into one of the year's first and most ubiquitous coat trends. Classic, elevated, and shockingly versatile, the style is yet another piece of proof that anything Holstein makes will turn to gold.

All the credit for the ongoing blanket-coat trend should go to Totême, the Swedish ready-to-wear brand that's taken Instagram by storm. Its scarf-attached wrap coats—made in cashmere, nylon, and wool forms—are impossible to miss in the fashion world, and if you ask me, they will continue to be around for many years to come.

I'm finding it hard to believe that this H&M coat is still in stock.
Traditional menswear silhouettes have influenced womenswear for years now. Last year's take on the trend manifested in waistcoats, ties, and low-rise, slouchy trousers, but this year, it's all about tailored yet oversize coats that more often than not are double-breasted and feature a heavy dose of shoulder padding.

No outerwear trend has skyrocketed to ubiquity in 2023 quite like overstuffed jackets, which is due in large part to Kendall Jenner, Taylor Russell, and Hailey Bieber all wearing Loewe's F/W 22 leather jacket. The hyper-inflated bomber was a showstopper on the runway, but it wasn't until the celeb set welcomed it with open closet doors that Jonathan Anderson's creation hit viral status.

The return of peacoats into fashion's good graces is proof enough that you should never get rid of, well, anything. This is especially true when it comes to classic outerwear, no matter how few people are wearing it. After all, an epic homecoming is only one or two runway collections away. In the case of peacoats, thank Altuzarra, Bottega Veneta, and Capasa Milano.

Three cheers for Zara's super-luxe big-sister company.
Our current obsession with floor-sweeping coats made of faux fur began when Bieber practically snatched one off Saint Laurent's F/W 22 runway to wear around Paris during fashion week. Since, high and low brands alike have introduced furry maxi-length outerwear to their winter offerings, with standouts including Rotate Birger Christensen's striped style that's set to be a big hitter during fashion month in February and a dark-brown option from Camille Charrière's Mango collaboration.

Quick—this coat already sold out at Mango, but it's still available at ASOS.
If you're looking to invest, all signs point to this coat.
