I Tried the Controversial Trend the Fashion Crowd Is Obsessed With This Season

I think of myself as pretty open to experimenting with new trends. (I am a fashion editor, after all.) Generally speaking, I tend to dress on the more conservative side, so when a deluge of ethereal sheer pieces started appearing on the runways back in fall 2022—and en masse at every fashion week thereafter—there’s no denying I felt slightly intimidated. Can I master this daring new trend? Do I want to? The answer is 100% yes. This season, in particular, I'm drawn to the romantic, soft, sheer, and flowing chiffon and tulle fabrics dominated on the S/S 25 runways via skirts, blouses, dresses, and pants in ethereal shades.
This month, I decided to give my wardrobe a soft filter in sheer fabrics that feel equally sensual and sophisticated. Take a peek below to see a few of the sheer styles I've been wearing lately. Then keep scrolling as I share some of my favorite sheer pieces that are trending right now.
I personally think one of the coolest ways to wear the trend is by pairing a sheer skirt with a casual oversize tee (or button-down shirt) and flip-flops. The casual pieces offset the statement transparent fabric. Whether the skirt is fully transparent or embellished with lace and sequins as this one that I'm wearing from Vrg Grl is, it's a no-fail outfit formula. Just make sure the tee is a little oversize so it hits below the hip.
Poolside is the perfect moment to lean into the trend. A semi-sheer dress can act as a cover-up over a bikini but also easily transitions from beach to bar.
For a recent milestone birthday bash I had this month, I decided to go for a sheer embellished sequin skirt, which I styled over a pair of undies. At first I thought it was pretty daring, but everyone convinced me it looked incredibly pretty, so I went for it, and I'm so glad I did. Top tip: Match your undies to your top.
I even tried the sheer trend for a day at the office (I'm lucky to work in a fashion office!) and opted for a semi-sheer white skirt (similar to those we saw on the S/S 25 runways), and paired it with a basic relaxed black cashmere sweater. I finished the look with a pair of retro sneakers. The whole look was the perfect combination of fashion-forward and polished.
This transparent leopard-print dress certainly makes a statement, and I've been wanting to wear it out and about without feeling too "uncovered." I styled it with a black slip underneath to make me feel more comfortable and gave it a casual spin with flip-flops.
