Skirts have gone to extremes this year. With the mini going micro (thanks to Miu Miu) and maxis making a return, the world is your oyster when it comes to which style to choose. But autumn is fast approaching, so the maxi seems more appealing right now. You may remember styling a denim iteration in the '00s with a disk belt (how could we ever forget them?), and now, they're back. Thankfully, disk belts haven't returned, but denim maxi skirts have certainly been spotted recently. They seem to pair particularly well with silky tops. I'm also seeing the fashion set wearing bias-cut slip styles, often with a shirt tied at the waist. (See Monikh's look below.)
The hard part isn't choosing which maxi skirt to wear—it's which top to wear with it. The longer length can make baggier tops swamp a smaller frame, and some basics such as vests can look odd tucked in. As a fan of the maxi skirt for the second time around (I was the person wearing them with the low-slung belts), I can tell you they don't look good with every top. So to make it easier for everyone to try out this new (old) trend, I've listed the four tops that look best with maxi skirts below.
1. Long-Sleeved Shirt
Usually, I would tell everyone to grab a size up in shirts for an oversized, slouchy fit. But when it comes to styling with maxi skirts, I think true-to-size is best. Monikh is petite and shows how a simple knot at the front can stop a shirt from looking too baggy.
Coloured shirts are still a thing, and this bold green will never fail.
If you want to give your maxi skirt a break, try it with the matching trousers.
I'm imagining this with a beige maxi skirt and fisherman sandals.
The Frankie Shop's iteration would look good left undone over a denim style.
2. Silky Cami Top
Creating a whole throwback look with a cowl-neck cami top and a denim maxi, French girl Anne-Victoire makes me want to try out this look. In autumn, I would switch out the platform sandals for Western boots.
The cowl neck is back to make us all feel nostalgic.

3. Matching Blouse
Want to know the way to click refresh on the maxi for 2022? Style it as a co-ord. Frann looks effortless in this Whistles two-piece, and we all know a matchy-matchy set is the way to look like you've made a huge effort (with minimal effort).
Frann's top is still available in all sizes, as is the matching skirt.
Zimmermann's skirt-and-blouse set is one not to miss.
You could also wear the matching skirt and top with suede boots for autumn.

4. Short-Sleeved Shirt
The reign of the short-sleeved shirt is far from over. As opposed to its long-sleeved counterpart, this style looks best oversized and left undone over a maxi. Proving my point, Rachael has chosen a Jacquemus style from the men's section to achieve that slouchy fit.
