The 2020 Trend I Bet J.Lo, Katie Holmes, and Amal Clooney Will Stand Behind

If you were to rattle off the most timeless fashion essentials anyone could own, I have a strong feeling a khaki trench coat would top your list. Honestly, it makes perfect sense. There’s nothing quite as elegant and practical than a trench. And while we’ll never say no to the classic cut, reimagined iterations have been trickling in for seasons now, keeping the silhouette modern and forward.

But interestingly enough, just as we thought we’d seen all the updated trench coats the market had to offer, the S/S 20 collections—I’m talking the bulk of the top shows—hit us with a variety of fresh, upgraded trenches. The presence was so grand that I’d deem the next-gen trench—those featuring everything from deconstructed designs to intricate details like leather trimming— as a 2020 must-have.

I’m definitely adding this trend to my shopping list, and I have a hunch many celebrities will also follow suit—especially Jennifer Lopez, Katie Holmes, and Amal Clooney. Why? Well, after scrolling through their best street style moments over last year, I noticed that this group of A-listers have already been testing out modern trenches. Given their sartorial interest in the trend already, I bet they’ll stand behind the new trenches hitting the scene this year.

To showcase further, I rounded up how this fashion-forward trio wore this jacket silhouette in 2019, along with the fresh trench pick I think they’ll love. Naturally, I also shopped out the coolest trenches currently available if you, too, want to get a jump start on the look. Oh, and if you keep scrolling, you can also shop other strong outerwear picks.

On Jennifer Lopez: Monse dress; Jimmy Choo heels

While J.Lo’s eye-catching plaid dress and pumps would have worked on their own, the addition of the duster trench added an extra level of dimension.

While J.Lo opted for a more classic silhouette above, she’s also known for pushing the sartorial boundaries, so this architectural Michael Kors trench could be of interest.

On Katie Holmes: Zimmermann trench

A luxurious leather trench brought a modern twist to Holmes’s blouse, jeans, and booties look.

Given Holmes’s apparent interest in the leather trench coats out there, she’d likely be into silhouettes like this from one Junya Watanabe—love that glossy finish and extra-long silhouette.

On Amal Clooney: Proenza Schouler jacket; Bottega Veneta dress; Dior heels

Clooney enhanced her work silhouette with a color-blocked trench that’s statement-making yet appropriately sophisticated.

Never shy of stepping out in a bold color, Clooney would probably love Coach’s bold interpretation of the trench coat here.
