All My Outfits Are Now Built Around These 5 Items

One of my New Year's resolutions last year was to be more strategic with my purchases, and almost a year later, I'm happy to report I've done a pretty good job of sticking to it. The main way I did this was by skipping trends that don't speak to me and investing in timeless pieces instead. Each season, I've created somewhat of a capsule wardrobe made up mostly of closet staples with a few key trends that mix well with my personal style sprinkled in. This way, my wardrobe consists only of pieces I absolutely love, and I end up reaching for them on repeat all season.
This winter is no different—meaning the same handful of items are getting all the attention right now. I've been relying on various combinations of my favorite pieces, reaching for them so frequently that the cost per wear on these is virtually zero. From the denim style I wear with every outfit to the coat silhouette I can't get enough of, these five versatile winter basics have become the backbones of my wardrobe. The best part is each item is less of a trend and more of a staple, so I'll continue to return to them for years to come.
1. TURTLENECKS
Elegance has commanded the fashion world all year, and to me, there's nothing more polished than a turtleneck. Whether it's a fitted bodysuit or chunky knit, the high neckline adds a sophisticated touch to any outfit. Plus, it's great for layering. I've been wearing both fitted and looser styles on repeat this season.
2. TIGHTS
As someone who used to avoid tights at all costs, consider me converted. I love the texture they add to a look—not to mention the practical element during the colder temperatures. Sheer, lace, and matte styles have been on heavy rotation to give my favorite miniskirts and dresses a winter touch.
3. EXTRA-LONG COATS
Maxi hemlines have been trending for a few seasons now, and I've been loving how this has translated to coats. There's just something about a floor-skimming silhouette that I find so chic. Since outerwear is the most visible part of a look, an extra-long coat is the outfit during the winter months.
4. DARK-WASH, STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS
Straight-leg jeans are by no means a new trend, but after the denim pendulum swung back and forth between slim and baggy silhouettes for a few seasons, a straight-leg style feels particularly polished right now. My favorite pairs have been the base of almost every outfit I've put together recently, and I've been gravitating toward darker washes for a more elevated look.
5. PERSONALITY ACCESSORIES
This winter has been the season of the personality piece, and I'm fully on board. I've been keeping the rest of my outfits more streamlined and letting my favorite accessories do the talking—think leather gloves, faux-fur scarves, and bold jewelry. Adding one of these personality pieces makes my outfit feel thoughtful, even if it's made up of the other items I've been wearing on repeat.
