7 Trends Fashion Insiders Are Ditching Come September
No one wants to admit it, but industry insiders—from editors to influencers—have abandoned thoughts of summer and now have Fashion Month squarely on the brain. With New York Fashion Week less than 30 days away, now is the time to get ahead of shopping the coolest fall trends. But there's always a bit of disparity when it comes time to translate what hits the runway into something you can wear IRL. Sure, small sunglasses or cowboy boots may seem cool in theory, but not everyone is quite ready to take them seriously.
So what is it that those ahead of the curve will be wearing in the coming months? Below seven insiders share their insight into exactly what they're buying and holding off on as fall approaches. With thoughts on everything from the next It accessory to the most flattering hues for fall, you'll have plenty of inspiration for what to add to your must-have list for the near future. And while choosing which trends to pass on is obviously something everyone has to decide for themselves (and not all of us will agree, as you'll see below), it's helpful to hear why those setting the trends are choosing not to cherry-pick the pieces you may have been considering. Read on for a full breakdown.
Alyssa Vingan Klein, editor in chief, Fashionista
Shop: "Designers in every fashion capital have clearly taken lots of inspiration from the American Southwest recently, as cowboy-friendly styles were all over the fall runways. From Western shirts to cap-toed boots to fringe skirts, and, yes, even bolo ties, brands like Isabel Marant, Louis Vuitton, Coach, Alberta Ferretti, and Hermès offered up their own iterations. Luckily, these classic pieces are easy to find on either end of the market and in vintage stores all over the country."
Skip: "While tiny sunglasses have been on the Instagirl radar for quite some time, long, shiny black leather coats were a popular item on the runways this fall, making appearances at Alexander Wang, Coach, and Marc Jacobs. This is not an easy look to pull off unless you're, say, Gigi Hadid, who had a matchy-matchy moment with Zayn in full Matrix gear back in January. In my opinion, it's better left to Neo and co.—and back in the '90s."
Katie Sturino, The 12ish Style
Shop: "My hottest topic is around the belt bag. I am excited for the trend to continue and to double down on another designer one because I am overjoyed with my hands-free life and I cannot go back."
Skip: "One trend I wish would go away is small sunglasses because they do not frame my face in a great way."
Nikki Ogunnaike, style director, Elle.com
Shop: "I can't wait to break out some neon pieces, especially bright ones, to pair with traditional fall colors like navy and brown. The contrast will be fresh and exciting."
Skip: "Western! I'm happy to leave those frontier-inspired items to real-deal cowboys."
Kat Collings, editor in chief,Best Knockoff Luxury Clothing
Shop: "I'm excited to try gloves, especially sheer ones. I've been saving images for months, and I still have no clue how to exactly pull it off in real life, which is kind of thrilling in itself."
Skip: "I'm ready to ditch shell jewelry. I still enjoy the trend in a vacuum for sure. It's playful and a refreshing antidote to all the layered gold jewelry. But since it's such an inherently summery trend, I'm laying it to rest for fall. Plus it became such a Trend with a capital T, so the saturation point came quickly."
Sherri McMullen, founder, McMullen
Shop: "I'm excited to wear metallics this fall. I have my eye on a metallic silver leather skirt paired with a cozy sweater. I might even go there with my makeup. Stay tuned!"
Skip: "I'm ready to say buh-bye to off-the-shoulder tops and dresses. We have seen this trend for a couple of years now, so we can put it on the shelf."
Jessica Minkoff, fashion content editor, Bergdorf Goodman
Shop: "I love the idea of only carrying the essentials in a micro-mini bag. I have my eye on a few logo-infused styles from Fendi!"
Skip: "I am ready to scale back and embrace a bit more of a minimalist look when it comes to patterns. For fall, I am all about punk-inspired tartan."
Caroline Maguire, fashion director, Shopbop
Shop: "Fall 2018 is explosive with bold colors, and I can't wait to get my hands on a bright faux-fur coat. I'm obsessed with the animal print that's coming in for fall, especially in jewel tones."
Skip: "I'll be ditching my boring black top coat—bye!"
Now you're all set with which trends to try (and which to skip) this fall!
