I'm Planning My Staycation Wardrobe—6 Cool Summer Outfits I'll Definitely Be Re-Creating
Over the past few years, it feels like the British seaside has come increasingly into the spotlight as a tempting option for a staycation. Spots like Cornwall, Rye and Dorset have always been go-tos for gorgeous beaches, but now they're bonafide hotspots, thanks to their incredible restaurants, shops, wine bars and more. But, as with any trip, planning a getaway to the British coast requires thinking about what to pack.
No matter which stretch of the coastline you choose, the sun-soaked bays of the Mediterranean it will not be. As someone who grew up spending many a summer on a Scottish island where not jumping into the freezing waters would earn you a week of family ridicule, I'm more than familiar than with a chillier beach day—and for me, it doesn't take away from the charm. It does, however, mean you have to be realistic about your outfit choices.
First and foremost, check your chosen trusted weather app religiously. Sure, it's sunny now, but are grey clouds heading your way in a couple of hours? The safest bet is to work with layers—and luckily, this can create a seriously chic look. Start with your shorts or linen trousers, add on a t-shirt or button down, but be sure to have a thicker knit tied over your shoulders or tucked into your raffia tote.
Second, dress for the beach experience you're aiming for. If you want to sunbathe or swim, then make sure you've got clothing that's easy to whip on and off, and don't forget to pack a jumbo towel or sheet to change behind at the end of the day. And finally, start from the shoes up: If you're planning on a long walk or a stroll around a seaside town, keep things sensible. The beach, whether it's pebbles or sands, is no place for suede flats or heeled sandals. Trusty Birkenstocks are sturdy enough to support you for a longer stroll across hill and rocks to reach your favourite bay, but if you're just planning on wandering around town with a brief beach interlude, you can afford to opt for sleeker leather flats that you can easily throw into your bag when it comes time for your seaside stroll.
To help get you inspired, I've found some perfect examples of British seaside outfit that I'd definitely wear to the beach, and probably get plenty of wear from all summer long, too.
1. Striped Shorts + Sandals
Style Notes: Lucky enough to be enjoying a sunny day? Go on, get the shorts out. Striped shorts and trousers are a big trend this season—lean into their classic coastal vibe by pairing with a white linen shirt that is perfect for sticky days.

2. Black Linen Set + Crossbody Bag
Style Notes: It's very possible that your beach plans go from sunbathing to strolling around town, so be prepared for both with an easy look that will be just as appropriate on the beach as off. Linen is by far the best warm weather fabric, but opting for an all black set ensure you don't appear over-enthusiastic about British summer weather.

3. Striped Jumper + White Linen Trousers
Style Notes: Is there anything more coastal than a nautical stripe? Lean into the preppy vibe by styling a sea breeze-proof striped jumper with easy linen trousers that you can pull over your swimsuit.

A raffia tote is a summer must-have.
A true classic that is more than up for a long walk on a pebble beach.
4. Long Dress + Slides
Style Notes: Sure, this look may be more appropriate for lunch by the beach rather than sitting on a blanket on the sand (or pebbles), but by opting for a breezy silhouette, you can easily throw it over a swimsuit so that you jump in the sea, if the mood strikes you.

These slides are more than refined enough to wear off the beach.
Loewe raffia totes are a cult designer item.
5. Shirt + White Shorts
Style Notes: Oh how I dream of reenacting this exact moment, outfit, dog and all. Whether you'll be on a boat like Lucy or lounging on a beach, this colourful look is such a cool summer vibe.

6. Denim Shorts + Colourful Flip-Flops
Style Notes: There's arguably nothing easier than denim shorts. Give yours a sleek upgrade by pairing it with a billowing blouse, colourful flip-flops and raffia tote. It's all the summer staples, with a subtle fashion upgrade.
