Why is it that we're surprised by the lower drop in temperature every December? I mean, It's as predictable as Anna Wintour wearing sunglasses on the FROW, yet we exclaim at its coming all the same. If you're like me, what typically ensues is a last-minute scrabble to find the winter coats that have lain dormant in your wardrobe for the last nine months and a hurried reacquainting with the art of layering. Well, as always, we're here to give you a helping hand in the fashion department. And now that the temperature has dropped even lower (and a snow forecast is on its way, eek), our first port of call is always winter basics.
We all know that staples are an important part of a wardrobe, yet we find that during the colder months, having your foundations in place is more important than ever. It's all about simple pairings: a chunky knit and straight-leg jeans, a long-line puffer and lace-up combat boots. Minimal effort, maximum impact. To get you started, we've rounded up the seven winter staples that we personally turn to year after year and never fail to give our cold-weather capsules a boost. 1. Chunky Knit
The cosiest crew-neck knit in a neutral beige - a great addition to a capsule wardrobe.
If you're looking for a forever knit, Navy Grey has you covered. This jumper is the ideal slouchy style and also comes in a neutral mole colour, but we love this classic navy hue.
Stripes have undoubtedly become the motif for that last few years and COS's contemporary take is one of the best out there.

The time is now for stomping boots and John Lewis have some strong contenders. This sole is particularly great for gripping in the snow.
A polished take on the traditional Chelsea boot with a slightly sharper toe. Pair it with anything from dresses to jeans.
You can always rely on Chelsea boots come winter. They're practical, stylish and weather-wicking. Win-win!
Legres is my go-to for footwear, particularly in the colder months. The riding boot trend continues to dominate and this style offers a slightly chicer take with the added suede.
3. Chic Coat
Arket longline puffers are a sell-out every single year, so if you're in the market to invest in some chic (yet warm) outerwear, this style is tried, tested and true among satorialists.
Chic and classic, this Toteme coat will carry you from the office to date night and beyond.
The most impressive scarf coat I've seen on the high street this winter. It's made from soft wool-blend that makes it super cosy.
Leather outerwear is big every winter but even more so this year. The sheeny fabrication will add a touch of a matrix vibe to any outfit, all whilst keeping you toasty.
4. Tights

A winter staple needn't be boring, and this knit dress in a khaki green add a little colour to the colder days.
Whether you're team mini or team maxi, a chic roll neck will never let you do.
6. Cosy Cardigan
The fact is, you cannot beat a cosy cardigan. Wear on its own as a top or layer over a roll neck knit when it's around the zero degree mark.

7. Woollen Accessories
