The Designer Bags That Dominated Street Style Over the Past Decade
From OTT exaggerated proportions to miniature re-creations of popular silhouettes, this decade we've seen handbags that span every aspect of the spectrum. Street style of the early 2010s will be remembered for top-handle tote bags by heritage brands like Mulberry, Prada, Givenchy and Celine, but the latter part of the decade made way for new cult labels and unique, instantly recognizable styles—think Shimps' pearl-covered Antonia bag or Staud's ever-popular netted bucket bag.
Additionally, in this last decade, much that was once old became new again. We saw the resurgence of Dior's saddlebag, which originally debuted in 1999 and the revival of the Fendi baguette, which was first released in 1997. Both new and vintage editions of the two designs gained traction amongst the street style set, perhaps as a response to our increased collective awareness around sustainability.
There's no denying that it's been an interesting decade for fashion, particularly where handbags were concerned. From simple silhouettes to innovative designs, here are the bags that ruled street style in the 2010s.
Though originally launched in 2002, the Mulberry Bayswater bag was very popular amongst the style-set in the early part of this decade. Carried by the likes of Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Blake Lively, its status was undeniable.
Released in 2010 under the creative direction of Phoebe Philo, the Céline Micro Luggage Bag was extremely coveted at the beginning of this decade, particularly after being seen on the arm of an Olsen twin.
With Riccardo Tisci at the helm, Givenchy launched the Antigona bag in 2011. It's instantly recognizable shape was loved by both celebrities and the style set, having been seen on Rihanna, Olivia Palermo and Rosie HW in the earlier years of this decade.
Introduced on the Fall 2010 runway, Proenza Schouler's PS11 bag was the popular follow up to the brand's original PS1 style which launched in late 2008.
Loved for its classic aesthetic and timeless shape, the Prada Galleria bag has actually been around for years but was particularly prominent with the street style set in the early 2010s.
Reportedly launched as a tribute to Coco Chanel's first love, Boy Capel, the Chanel Boy bag became an almost instant success following its debut in 2011.
Credited by Fashionista as an 'overnight sensation' the Mansur Gavriel bucket bag was released in 2013 and sold out almost immediately. The following year the bag was so sought-after, it was "one of the three most-searched items" on Lyst, according to Bussiness of Fashion.
Debuted on the S/S 2015 runway, the Chloé Faye Bag became exceedingly popular in the two years following its release, toted by many a street style star.
Spotted on major influencers including Susie Lau and Pernille Teisbaek, the J.W. Anderson Pierce Bag was a must-have amongst the style set in 2016.
Though originally launched in 1997, the Fendi Baguette bag experienced a huge resurgence in the last few years. In fact, as reported by Elle, re-sale site Vestiare has seen a 558 per cent increase in sales of the bag since January 2018.
Designed by Jonathan Anderson and released in 2015, the Loewe puzzle bag has maintained its popularity in the years since its launch, becoming a favourite amongst influencers and editors.
An undeniable classic, Louis Vuitton's speedy bag has maintained its popularity throughout the entire decade.
Introduced as a part of Alessandro Michele's first Gucci collection in Fall 2015, the Gucci Dionysus has become a lasting favourite amongst the fashion set.
Also released since Alessandro Michele took the helm of the famed Italian fashion house, the Gucci Marmont bag is incredibly distinct thanks to its chevron stitch detailing and interlocking GG logo.
Worn by any and every influencer, including Camille Charriere, Bettina Looney, Pandora Sykes and more, the pearl-adorned Shrimps Antonia bag has been a big hit since its release in 2016.
Staud bags took street style by storm in 2017, having been carried by the likes of Alexa Chung, Leandra Medine and more. After that, it wasn't long before the brand's Moreau netted style starting popping up all over the place.
Originally released in 1999, Dior revived its saddle bag on the A/W2018 runway, showing a number of new designs and colourways. Since then the style has regained popularity, with vintage iterations of the bag experiencing a resale value growth of +373%, according to The RealReal.
It wouldn't be fair to talk about recent handbag phenomenons without mentioning Jacquemus' Le Chiquito. The bag first appeared on the runway in 2018 and has since become both an Instagram and a street style sensation.
Following the success of Daniel Lee's debut at Bottega Veneta, the brand's shoes and accessories have become omnipresent amongst the street style set. Popular in shades of beige and black, Bottega's pouch bag was undoubtedly one of the most popular accessories of 2019.
