Anne Hathaway's Stylist Used These Products for Her Effortless French-Girl Waves
Anne Hathaway has been a bonafide beauty icon ever since her Princess of Genovia days. Recently, though, she's been leaning into a cool '60s aesthetic that's turning even more heads than usual. From shift dresses to bouffants and beyond, she's making the mod look relevant again (but, then again, when wasn't it?).
She debuted her most recent '60s-inspired look on the Elle's Women in Hollywood red carpet. Her long brunette locks were styled in perfectly undone waves, and her lash-grazing bangs were full and voluminous. It was giving us some serious French-girl references—a cross between Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot to be exact.
We had to know how she achieved this "less is more" look, so we tapped her hairstylist to get all the nitty gritty details. Hint: it's easier than you think and only takes three products. Keep scrolling to learn how to replicate this look at home.
Celebrity hairstylist and Virtue ambassador, Rena Calhoun, was responsible for Hathaway's look. And, no surprise here, the reference was, in fact, Jane Birkin. "For Anne’s Elle 2022 Women in Hollywood event look, I wanted to give her a ‘less is more’ down styled do, allowing her natural beauty to truly shine through, as it always does," she said. "I love the simplicity of the look, almost as if she just woke up this way, against the elegance of her gown, for the most striking contrast."
She used just three products to achieve this style. Keep scrolling to shop them all.
Step 1
Starting on damp hair, Calhoun applied this volumizing primer throughout Hathaway's hair. Once it was about halfway dry, she used a blow-dryer and a round brush to dry sections of the hair and form loose curls. From there, she took the loose curls and pinned them to the crown of her head, so they would set and create volume.
For her French-girl bangs, Calhoun blow-dried sections in alternating directions with a flat brush. This helped soften any cowlicks in her hairline.
Step 2
Then, she used a 1.5-inch curling iron to create those perfectly imperfect waves throughout her hair. She worked quickly in large sections, going under and over the barrel of the iron in alternating directions to create a lived-in texture.
Immediately after using the curling iron, Calhoun reached for Virtue's Texturizing Spray. She spritzed it down the length of her hair to give it even more texture and movement.
Step 3
After backcombing her hair at the crown for that '60s-esque volume, she locked everything in with hair spray. Virtue's 6-in-1 Style Guard Hairspray, to be exact.

This hair dryer uses concentrated airflow and negative ion technology to keep hair soft and shiny.
This curling iron performs as well as others that are double its price.
If you want to mimic Hathaway's glossy strands, use a shine spray. They give hair a healthy, light-reflective look.
Heat protectant spray is a must for keeping hair healthy.
The same goes for hair serum. They hydrate and strengthen the hair to avoid roughness and split ends.
