I Live in a "Smaller" City and Swear By This 17-Piece Simple Capsule Wardrobe

I moved to Boston last year after spending quite some time in New York City and Los Angeles. And while Beantown is certainly larger than a lot of cities, it is a bit smaller than what I’ve been used to. It also isn’t necessarily one of the "fashion capitals” compared to N.Y.C. or L.A. But like just about anywhere, there still is a major element of style in the city. As a result, I personally like to bring it with my sartorial choices whenever I’m in the mood. But while those eclectic looks do make it into my rotation, it’s the more basic ensembles that make up my day to day to stay comfortable yet chic. So naturally, I get the most out of those simple, elevated pieces. In fact, after going through my closet, there’s really about 17 items I truly couldn’t live without as they can be mixed and match to create my go-to fits. And thus, my capsule wardrobe was born.
Interested in the essentials that make up my Boston wardrobe? Keep scrolling to check out my capsule wardrobe, complete with six outfit ideas (although more could have been created) that would really work for anyone thanks to their versatility—no matter what city you reside in.
White Tee + Moto Jacket + Joggers + Sunglasses + Sneakers
I’d basically consider this my go-to off-duty uniform featuring trending joggers and other casual staples like a white tee, moto jacket, and sneakers.
Cardigan + Turtleneck + Trench Coat + Jeans + Loafers + Sunglasses + Crossbody Bag
For a more polished low-key fit, a layered ensemble with a cardigan and turtleneck looks A+ with jeans and loafers. While I’m into a trench right now, just about any outerwear piece would work here.
Trench Coat + Turtleneck + Vest + Leather Trousers + Loafers
A current vest over a turtleneck is sophisticated yet forward. Leather trousers also add dimension here, but a standard pair of black pants would work as well with loafers.
Button-Down + Cardigan + Skinny Jeans + Ankle Boots
For a professional but semi toned-down ensemble, sleek jeans like black skinnies team well with a button-down and cardigan.
Vest + Leather Trousers + Crossbody Bag + Sneakers
I’m into this look, but I also recommend it to my friends: a trendy vest with leather trousers and sneakers.
Button-Down + White Tee + Moto Jacket + Skinny Jeans + Ankle Boots
A moto jacket will add that edge to any look—including this denim fit.
Next, check out the shoes you should own if you live in basic jeans.
