Nipple-Matching Is the Newest Lip Trend—Here's How We Did It
Welcome to Internet Famous, a monthly series in which we ask our Instagram followers to vote on a viral beauty product that's taken social media by storm. Then the beauty team will take the winning pick for a spin and share their reviews—pictures included.
I'm no stranger to dark, rich lip liner, but I am new to the concept of choosing a beauty product based on the color of my nipples. Leave it to the product development team at Glossier to introduce our team of well-seasoned editors to a product that brings on a different type of introspection: a lip liner with shades meant to match the color of your nipples. I'm sure I'm not the first person to have to look inside my shirt before picking a lip liner shade, and I certainly won't be the last, especially now we have a whole team ofBest Knockoff Luxury Clothing editors singing the praises of Glossier's Lip Line ($18).
Many people avoid lip liners for fear of having unnatural-looking lips or choosing the wrong shade, but the nipple-matching technique simplifies the process and ensures your lips get that "my lips but better" look. And when I find a lip liner as impressive as this one, there's simply no going back. Glossier has dubbed it an "enhancing pencil" in bold letters right next to its five-star rating, and it lives up to that title. It's creamy, it's long-lasting, it glides like a dream, and it doesn't dry out my lips. Gone are the days of only wearing lip liner with a full face of makeup on a special occasion. My co-workers and I took all eight natural shades for a test-drive to prove it to you.
"Where have these lip liners been all of my life?! If I could create a dream liner, Glossier's Lip Line would be it. While the shades are designed to match your nipples (Ha! You're about to become intimately acquainted with theBest Knockoff Luxury Clothing team!), my lip color is deeper and rosier, and I typically look for neutral liners that are an exact match, or just a tad richer, to enhance my natural hue. I never wear just one shade of lip liner—I go darker on the center parts of my lips and lighter on the outer corners, so I used both Bit and Flush, and the combination couldn't have been more perfect. The formula is so creamy, but unlike other liners I've tried, the consistency isn't so slippery that you're left with under-fed pigment. It's a dream to apply, and I highly recommend snagging the sharpener as a $9 add-on simply because it's cute AF. I only wish there were a lip brush on the other end for easier blending, but I had no problem using my fingertips." — Erin Jahns, beauty director

"The color payoff and longevity of this lip liner are exactly what I look for. It wears well once applied, but blending requires more work than my other creamier formulas. I think this is a great option for the summer months because it won't melt off in the heat, but come winter, I'm curious how my dryer lips will react." — Natalie Gray Herder, editor, branded content

"I never thought to reach for a lip liner shade that matched my nipples, but consider me sold. The moment I put on the shade Buff, I was amazed. It was slightly darker than my lips, which I prefer in a lip liner for some contrast, and glided on so smoothly. It's been pairing flawlessly with all my neutral lip shades and is the first thing I reach for in my beauty cabinet now." — Anneliese Henderson, senior editor, branded content

"A mauve liner is my fail-safe, so I was particularly jazzed about the shade Bit. Let me tell you, the color payoff is magic—just one glide deposited so much pigment onto my lips. I thought it might even be too dark for my natural lip shade, but the formula is creamy enough to diffuse to my liking. I recently went to a brand event, during which a makeup artist paired this liner with Glossier's Ultralip High Shine Lipstick in the shade Lucite—I'm officially obsessed with this combo! After a little detective work, I discovered Sisley Paris's Phyto Lip Balm in shade 2 has the same effect. That's what I'm wearing in the photo." — Jamie Schneider, senior beauty editor

"Lip liner is a tricky business for me. Usually, the liner doesn't match my natural lip color at all, or if it does, it disappears before I finish my coffee. This one is a magical meet-in-the-middle product that looks natural and sticks around for hours at a time. The formula is smooth, creamy, and pigmented, and I'm fully obsessed." — Kaitlyn McLintock, associate beauty editor

I'm loyal to very few lip products because there's always a new and improved product on the market to test. But when it comes to lip liners, I became a loyalist about 72 hours ago when I tried this popular Glossier pencil. It truly is so easy to use with a creamy yet non-slippery formula. I actually chose to blend this all over my lips and added the tiniest bit of clear gloss. My lips stayed lined throughout an entire travel day and two full meals. (I know—I'm impressed too.) The combo of brown liner and pink gloss is apparently undefeated, so I'll be trying that out next!

"You know when you go to apply a new lip product and the shade seamlessly blends in with your lips? That's exactly what happened to me with Glossier's new Lip Line in the shade Grip. The neutral shade range is designed to enhance your natural lip color, so it gives a subtle, flattering definition that feels perfect for everyday makeup looks. Plus, the formula is super hydrating and long-lasting." — Emma Hughes, social media editor

"At the risk of exposing myself, I'll admit that I've only recently started to dabble with lip liner. I was always worried it would look fake, but this liner is anything but. It glides on so smoothly and comes in a range of natural shades. I've been loving Graze, a peachy, my-lips-but-better shade. I use it to outline and fill in my lips, and then I layer a tinted balm or gloss on top for a shiny finish." — Emma Walsh, associate editor, branded content
