I'm a Fashion Editor—Here Are the 10 Pieces on My 2023 Shopping List
One of the best parts of a new year? As a fashion editor, I would have to argue that it involves the newness in my wardrobe. With plenty of trends bubbling up, new buzzy brands that are on the rise, and pieces from the runway collections set to hit retailers soon, it's always prime time for me to set shopping intentions and narrow in on the pieces I’ll be adding to my personal cart. While there are plenty of finds I’ve been considering, there are some front-runners that I already know I’ll be adding to my closet.
I’ve been thinking about which pieces I want to invest in, so turned to the S/S 23 runways for inspiration to zero in on which buys I’ll be adding to my 2023 shopping list. They range from directional staples to more trend-driven pieces, but I can already envision each of them in my 2023 wardrobe. Ahead, the 10 best 2023 shopping finds, according to this editor.
1. Tube Dresses
The '90s fashion resurgence has been steadily growing and I'm particularly drawn to the tube dresses that were everywhere on the S/S 23 runways. Khaite had standout design that I'll be snapping up when it drops, but I'm also eyeing some of the pieces that have already landed on the market.
2. Rosette Pieces
The #1 trend our editors can't stop talking about? Rosettes. Endorsed on the Prada runway, I'm expecting to see this micro-trend rise to macro-trend status in 2023. It's perfect to start wearing immediately and long into the new year.
3. Denim Maxi Skirts
At New York Fashion Week, Tibi's denim maxi skirts made a major impact and I'm predicting they will be a key style to own next year. Buyers from Net-a-Porter have let us know that they are investing in the trend, in case you need more evidence.
4. Sleek Sets
Pantsuits and skirt sets have been dominating recently. While I don't see them going anywhere, I've been drawn to "alt" sets, including the sleek top and pants spotted on the Ferragamo runway. I personally just ordered Totême's version.
5. Metallic Accessories
In our S/S 23 runway report, we highlighted "heavy metals" as one of the core trends for spring. While metallics were noteworthy overall, I'm invested in ordering them in the accessories space—from Bottega Veneta's cult drop earrings to silver slingbacks.
6. Low-Rise Skirts and Pants
Low-rise pieces were one of the most divisive trends of the year, but also one of the most impactful. I've been slow to warm up to the trend, but I'm gravitating towards pieces such as the low-slung midi skirts in Miu Miu's S/S 23 collection. What makes this trend feel fresh is the more relaxed silhouettes that distinguish them from tighter Y2K styles.
7. Sheer Tights
We've already seen this exact no-pants Bottega Veneta look on Kendall Jenner. What made it work? The sheer black tights. While I'm not brave enough to leave the house pants-free, I will be incorporating sheer tights into my 2023 wardrobe.
8. Maxi Coats
At both Saint Laurent and The Row, floor-sweeping duster coats were the standout pieces everyone was talking about. To-the-ground maxi coats are a key buy, whether you invest in a leather piece or a tailored wool style.
9. Sequins
I can't stop thinking about Valentino's sparkling green trousers and I'm convinced that sequins will be a major player in 2023 fashion. We're already seeing stunning pieces from brands including Des_Phemmes and Bottega Veneta.
10. Fringe Pieces
Whether it's minimal and elegant, or Western-inspired, I can't stop thinking about all of the cool fringe pieces that are dropping at retailers right now. The designs feel unexpected and impactful, yet wearable, and I'm eager to test-drive them for myself.
