I'm a Beauty Editor—10 Body Butters That *Actually* Transform My Dry Skin
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kaitlyn, and I'm a beauty editor who's obsessed with bodycare. That means I have about 10 bottles of lotions and creams under my sink at any given moment, and they're all in various stages of testing. Add in the fact that I just moved back to the Midwest after spending six years in L.A. and Austin, and my love—nay, need—for body moisturizers has only intensified. After all, it's drier and colder here, and I don't necessarily want my skin to reflect that.
Since my skin has been particularly parched lately (and flaky and red and tight-feeling… sigh), I'm forgoing body lotion for something more effective: body butter. Compared to lotions, butters are normally thicker, richer, and more moisturizing thanks to formulas that lean heavily on naturally derived plant oils and (you guessed it) butters. I'm talking about skin-softening and smoothing ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, and more. Ahead, check out the 10 formulas I count on when I want to *actually* transform my dry skin.
10 Body Butters I Love
With a dreamy, whipped texture, this body butter sinks into my skin and instantly smoothes and softens texture and roughness. It uses a combination of coconut, maca, and vegan squalane to do so. The first ingredient hydrates the skin and delivers essential fatty acids, amino acids, electrolytes, and vitamins. The second ingredient smoothes the appearance of cellulite and firms the skin. Last but not least, the vegan squalane locks in moisture and strengthens the skin barrier.
I won't shut up about this body butter. I don't care how many jars I go through, how many people I talk about it with, or how many years go by. It's that good. First, it's the most moisturizing body butter I've ever used. Yes, it leaves some residue behind, but I'm okay with that. When you see how glowy and soft your skin is, you'll be okay with that too. Second, it's high in essential fatty acids, antioxidants, phytosterols, carotene, and vitamins A, C, D, and E, so it's like a multivitamin for your skin. Third, it contains absolutely no water or filler ingredients, so you're getting a lot of bang for your buck. Finally, it calms and prevents razor burn better than any other product I've tried. So, yeah, it's my favorite. PS: If you like the original formula, you'll probably like the new limited-edition version, called Mutha Body Butter Glow ($110). It has all the goodness of the original formula with a hint of shimmering bronzer for an even better glow.
Yes, the iconic Skin Food formula comes in a body butter! This formula uses calendula, pansy, rosemary, and chamomile to nourish the skin (hence the Skin Food name) while a combination of moisturizing oils and butters target dry skin. For only $18, you can't get much better than this.
By now, it's pretty evident that I love a body butter that has a whipped texture. They tend to feel lighter on my skin, spread easily, and leave less residue behind. This one is no exception. The iconic French pharmacy product quite literally melts into the skin, providing it with thermal spring water, shea oil, camelina oil, safflower oil, and glycerin.
This body butter is stealthy. Even though it's only $7, it delivers intense moisture to my dry, tight skin. Enriched with the brand's proprietary deep nourishing serum, as well as cocoa butter and vitamin E, I swear it has even helped minimize the appearance of my stretch marks. I think it deserves more hype.
If your skin gets dry enough to flake or, even worse, crack, then this body butter is a necessity. It contains 60% less water than most moisturizers. Instead of water, it's chock-full of kokum, mango, and shea butter, as well as hyaluronic acid, sunflower seed, and carnauba wax. Together, these intensely moisturizing ingredients repair dry skin, strengthen the moisture barrier, and repair cracked skin.
Don't sleep on Susanne Kaufmann bodycare products. This one in particular will keep your skin petal-soft. It's enriched with shea butter, vitamin E, whey, honey, beeswax, and olive oil—all incredibly effective moisturizers.
Especially effective at transforming dry, crepey skin into moisturized, smooth skin, this body butter uses ocean-harvested ingredients—namely undaria seaweed, which strengthens the skin's moisture barrier and fights free radicals. There's also shea butter, plant-derived amino acids, and ceramides.
This best-selling body butter smells incredible. Even though it's subtle, the coconut and vanilla scent lingers on the skin all day. Plus, a formula rich in shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, and hempseed oil means it simultaneously moisturizes and firms the skin.
This iconic body butter will stand up to dry skin no matter how cold it is outside. Thanks to a combo of squalane, jojoba oil, and shea butter, it soaks the skin in moisture (and locks it in so you don't have to constantly reapply). Like so many other formulas on this list, it has a whipped texture, which makes it feel light on the skin.
