I've Worn the Same Perfume for 10 Years, But These 8 Fragrances Changed Me
The creature of habit finally cracked.

It's true—I've worn the same perfume for almost 10 years of my life. After a really long run with Marc Jacobs's Daisy that lasted from my middle school days through my junior year of high school, it was time to step it up and mature my scent. That's when Chanel's Chance entered the picture, and the rest is history. (Read more about my love of the fragrance below.) One day, my colleagues overheard me talking about how I have never branched out as far as perfumes go and encouraged me to write a story about my journey of finally trying out some new scents. I reluctantly agreed and began to wear a different perfume every day for almost two weeks straight until I was able to narrow down a solid seven fragrances that really worked for me. For the most part, I landed on perfumes that only started to smell better the longer the fragrance sat on my skin. I didn't even notice them as the day went on, but they earned me many compliments from friends and even strangers.
Perfume is a very personal thing. Just because you like the smell straight out of the bottle doesn't mean it will smell the same on your skin. One perfume could smell amazing on one person but smell completely different on you. That's important to remember as I walk you through my recent fragrance journey, but hopefully, my digestible descriptors of each will help you understand the good that's waiting inside each bottle.
Ahead, read up on the perfume I have worn for most of my life and then check out the seven I ended up loving just as much.

Best Fall Fragrances of 2025
1. Best Overall: Chanel Chance
In my mind, Chanel's Chance perfume can do no wrong. No matter what mood I'm in or what the occasion is, this scent always fits the bill. This scent has become a part of my identity. When my friends hug me after not having seen me for a while, they always say, "Ah, you smell like you." The smell they speak of is Chanel Chance. I wear both the eau de parfum and the Eau Tendre. Both smell very different, but they also sit equally as well on my skin, and the scent only gets better over time. The eau de parfum is a bit more robust and musky with warm hints of amber, vanilla, and spiciness from pink pepper that hits immediately upon the first spritz.
Pros: A full, long-lasting fragrance, good for any occasion
Cons: Some say the formula has changed over time
Key notes: Pink pepper, jasmine absolute, amber patchouli, white musk, and vanilla
Size: 3.4 oz
Customer review: "This is my favorite perfume. Not too overwhelming and pleasant to all. My daughter in law always comments on how good it smells. I guess that's a good thing!"
2. Runner-Up: Chanel Chance Eau Tendre
Unlike the eau de parfum, Chanel's Chance Eau Tendre is floral and fresh. I tend to wear this one more in the spring and summer, but not exclusively. These two fragrances are always what I compare any new perfume to, and up until recently, I hadn't found any that I loved as much. This one is also on the lighter side (it's not as rich as my overall pick), so it's ideal for people with sensitive skin.
Pros: Floral and fruity, rich, warm
Cons: Needs to be reapplied
Key notes: Amber, vanilla, and pink pepper
Size: 1.7 oz
Customer review: "I'm a long time Chanel woman, and love to switch up my Chanel fragrances. So happy with the Chance Eau Tendre parfum! A delightful, soft scented, long lasting perfume. Many compliments from friends, strangers and, most of all, my husband."
3. Best Floral: Gucci Bloom
For anyone who thinks they hate floral perfumes, don't knock this one until you've tried it. Gucci's Bloom is one of the best-smelling fragrances I've come across in a long time, hence the intention of the article. While multiple floral scents hit the nose right off the bat, it's the rich smell of jasmine that lingers on the skin all throughout the day that convinced me this fragrance was for me.
Pros: Floral but not powdery, rich
Cons: Can be too strong for some
Key notes: Rangoon creeper, tuberose, and jasmine bud
Size: 1 oz
Customer review: "I got this perfume for my mom, and I ended up loving it to the point that I had to purchase for myself. It smells very good. The scent stays on for very long time, and if you like flower smell, you're gonna fall in love with this Gucci bloom perfume out of all of the Gucci collection. This is the best one."
4. Best Musk: Maison Margiela Replica Coffee Break
This Maison Margiela fragrance errs on the musky and warm side of the spectrum and really does transport you to the place it's named after—a coffee shop. Coffee Break is bold and aromatic with strong notes of—you guessed it—coffee, lavender, and a little cedarwood. This fragrance is pretty full already with a variety of notes, so there's no need to layer if you want a one-and-done perfume.
Pros: A warm and cozy fragrance
Cons: Not ideal for layering
Key notes: Coffee, red apple, lemon essence, lavender essence, spearmint essence, orange flower absolute, milk mousse accord, Sri Lankan sandalwood essence, and Virginia cedarwood essence
Size: 3.4 oz
Customer review: "I bought this blind and went for the full size and I am so glad I did! It is unique and rich and feminine on me despite being a full scent. I can smell it on my wrists when I go to bed at night after wearing it all day. I will for sure be repurchasing. This fragrance and Lipstick On are my two favorite from Maison Margiela."
5. Best Sweet: Dior Sakura
Not only does this bottle look quite chic on my dresser, but the scent is also to die for. The fragrance was designed to be reminiscent of the cherry blossoms in Japan, and I've never been there, but I would imagine they smell exactly like this perfume. For those days when I want just a refreshing hint of something to spritz on, I always reach for this floral but not-too-sweet perfume.
Pros: A great unisex option
Cons: Not very intense, needs to be reapplied
Key note: Japanese cherry blossom
Size: 3.4 oz
Customer review: "Beautiful scent that I will always carry in my perfume collection. I also have matching body lotion and the combo of both products is intoxicating. Highly recommend and suggest giving a try."
6. Best Vanilla: Byredo Slow Dance
Are you surprised that a Byredo scent made it into the mix? No, you're not. That's because people far and wide love the quality fragrances Byredo puts out time and again. For me, Slow Dance did the trick. It is the perfect winter fragrance complete with strong notes of vanilla, honey, and violet that make you want to bundle up in a sweater. I'm not sure how the sweater is related, but you know what I mean.
Pros: Easy to layer, good seasonal fragrance
Cons: Expensive
Key notes: Opoponax, geranium, labdanum, violet, vanilla, and patchouli
Size: 1.7 oz
Customer review: "I can't explain why, but this is the best perfume I've ever owned and smelt in my entire life. Get it!"
7. Best Mature: Chanel Gabrielle Chanel
I love the smell of jasmine, and this perfume has all the right hints of it without smelling too much like a floral arrangement. It is mature and elegant just like the bottle. I love spritzing this on for a chic night out, for the smell only gets better and better the longer it sits on your skin.
Pros: Floral but not overpowering
Cons: Doesn't last as long
Key notes: Jasmine and orange blossom
Size: 1.2 oz
Customer review: "This fragrance makes me feel beautiful, sophisticated and ready for anything."
8. Best Woody: Le Labo Santal 33
It would be a crime to not include Santal 33 on this list. It's both woody and sensual, and it's become a staple fragrance for the brand's cult following. This scent was created with a blend of unique notes such as Australian sandalwood, cedarwood, cardamom, iris, violet, and spicy and musky notes. People rave about this scent because of how long-lasting it is, making it well worth the price.
Pros: Long-lasting, woody, unisex
Cons: Expensive
Key notes: Australian sandalwood, cedarwood, cardamom, iris, violet, and spicy and musky notes
Size: 1.7 oz
Customer review: "I love the smell of Santal 33, even though I know it's one of the more ubiquitous 'niche' fragrances. A few sprays lasts all day and I find the fragrance to be strong enough to be noticeable but subtle enough to not offend anyone."
