Sorry, Ballet Flats—These Are the Chicer-to-Me Flat Shoes I Always Wear Instead
I own so many pairs.
Ballet flats have been on a historic run. The shoes were a key aspect of the 2010s twee aesthetic that dominated through at least 2016, and while other aspects of that era haven't made a solid comeback (I'm looking at you, chandelier statement necklaces), ballet flats did. They became a symbol of a new trend when the coquette aesthetic took over. Suddenly, everyone was decked out in bows, pleated school-uniform skirts, and ballet flats.
They were shoes I didn't really appreciate the first time around but really started to love recently. They were comfortable, cute, and easy to wear. They looked good with everything from pants to skirts. They added a quirk and ease to everything, but I wore them so often that I may have overdone it. When I wanted to switch things up, I started to lean into Mary Janes and haven't looked back since.
What I love about Mary Janes is that they possess all of the cutesy qualities of ballet flats that I love, but unlike ballet flats, Mary Janes have straps across the top that add a little extra something. Some of them even come with buckles and chunky soles. Mary Janes have a bit more heft, so they often feel better to switch out for ballet flats once fall and winter roll around. Mary Janes also just feel like ballet flats' chicer, more elevated and grown-up sister, which is exactly why I don't feel bad swapping out my ballet flats in favor of them for the immediate future.
