I Never Wear Pants, But This Big 2025 Trend Has Converted Me

I am a skirt girl. I haven’t always been one, but now I am devout—so much so that whenever I wear a pair of pants, people ask me if I’m okay. Sometimes, even my closest friends do a double-take, saying they didn’t recognize me. And that exact thing has been happening more frequently lately, as I’ve become completely enamored with a pants trend that might just make me a convert.

It’s not just a simple pants trend, though. I think my aversion to pants, in general, comes from how they can feel like a prison in that they're literally restricting. I love the flow and movement of a good skirt. It’s flirty, it’s fun, and it lets you flounce about in a way that makes me feel giddy. Pants, on the other hand, usually lack that energy. They feel more buttoned-up—more corporate and more casual. But lately, some pants actually capture that skirt-like spirit.

Oversize trousers are big, billowy, and undeniably in. From Tory Burch to Tibi, Alaïa to Khaite, and Dries Van Noten, they’re all over the runway. But my love affair with them started at London Fashion Week, during a Simone Rocha show. The world Simone Rocha creates is pure feminine fantasy—piles of pearls, fistfuls of tulle. She designs the most divine skirts in my closet, a mismatched collage of red gingham and floral patterns. So when she sends a trouser down the runway, I pay close attention.

Simone Rocha’s trousers these past few seasons have had a lovely, loose flow to them. They pool around the ankles, gathering like a balloon of water that shifts shape with every step. When I saw a pair on sale at Net-a-Porter last season, I couldn’t resist—and now I wear them every other day. Even my boyfriend has started stealing them, which tells you just how perfect they are. They’re fun for the whole family.

After years of a skirts-only mindset, I’ve realized I was missing out. Oversize, billowing trousers offer the same movement and flow, but with the added benefit of fewer potential wardrobe malfunctions. I also love mixing aesthetics. If something feels too feminine, I instinctively add a masculine or sporty touch to balance it out. Trousers do that effortlessly, and an oversize silhouette makes it feel even more in tune with my personal style. They create an ever-evolving silhouette that can shift depending on how you style them. There’s so much freedom in that.

For a while, big pants felt like a Gen Z staple—a rebellion against the skinny jeans of millennials past. But they’re truly for everyone, especially with the long-rumored cigarette pant comeback finally on the horizon. If that look isn’t for you, consider wide-leg trousers instead. I swear, if you’ve been a pants skeptic (or a devoted skirt lover), they’ll turn you into a convert in no time.
