5 Reasons I'm Paying Attention to the Coach Show

It was easy to guess that the Coach show today would get us talking, and it did. From the insane set and the pieces you can buy straight from the runway to the new take on cool Americana style and celebrity appearances, including Selena Gomez, we were right. To make everything that happened at the show easily digestible, I broke down all of the most important takeaways into bite-size sections. Ahead, take an inside look at everything that happened today on and off the runway at the Coach 1941 show.

1. The Setting

The set was something to see. Guests gathered at Pier 94 in New York City in a darkened room filled with antique finds sourced from Texas and California as well as structures like an oxidized dinosaur sculpture built from scavenged materials.

2. The Americana Focus

Last season, Coach's fall 2018 show took inspiration from the American West, like many collections have through the years. But for Coach, Americana is a touchstone that's part of the heritage brand's DNA, so it comes as no surprise that creative director Stuart Vevers built on these Americana references today in the spring 2019 show.

This time around, inspiration was more specific to the southwest and Santa Fe, where the designer recently traveled. The references—from the desert landscape to heirloom-inspired pieces—were a clear sign of the influence the locale had on the collection.

3.The Dark Mood

During the show, a dark mood emerged—clothes looked almost worn or distressed, and a punk attitude carried through everywhere from the clothes to the sets to the hair and makeup looks. A release after the show described it as "A new, new romantic gang; dreamers traversing an unravelling prairie landscape in the wake of their revolution, trailing scavenged and salvaged American heirlooms."

4. Selena Gomez

The face of Coach, Selena Gomez, attended the runway show, sitting front row alongside Petra Collins and Paloma Elsesser. But there was also a mix of celebrity veterans including Whoopi Goldberg with newer names like Maisie Williams, Tommy Dorfman, and more.

5. The See-Now, Buy-Now Collaboration

For the runway show, Coach partnered with Disney to debut a special collection of see-now, buy-now pieces that are available to order for a limited time. The whimsical items all feature characters from Disney.
