I'm in My 30s, and This Is My Ultimate Fall Capsule Collection Checklist
I have something to admit: I spent the better part of my 20s absolutely hoarding clothes (shopping is kinda my job, can you blame me?), and it wasn't until I hit my 30s that I decided to start downsizing my closet. To shop and consume fashion more sustainably—and make getting dressed each day way easier—I decided to build a capsule wardrobe full of timeless, go-with-everything clothing and accessories. With fall in full swing, now is the time for my carefully curated collection of pieces—think sleek and simple coats, oversize blazers, and classic ankle boots—to truly shine.
Of course, there's more to a fall capsule collection than outerwear and boots; there are several items I consider absolute necessities for putting together a week's worth of solid autumn 'fits. A good mix of polished and cozy, these are the pieces I reach for on the daily. Trust me—they're great for layering and surpassing the trend cycle.
Ahead, I outlined eight must-have items for building a fall capsule collection of your own—consider it a checklist of sorts. Keep scrolling to check out all the essential fall clothes for women and snag some of my favorite pieces while you're at it.
1. Brown Blazers
Hands down, a brown blazer is my number one fall essential, as you can throw one on over any outfit and look instantly polished (yes, even sweats). Plus, I love that it feels slightly less dressy than a black blazer.
Not a fan of plaid? Opt for a similar style in buttery vegan leather.
2. Black Wool Coats
A simple black coat is always a reliable staple for colder weather, as it adds much-needed warmth without overpowering the rest of your look. I like mine long and slouchy, like the above.
3. Camel Turtlenecks
When it comes to layering, a camel turtleneck is always a good basic to have on hand. The same goes for other neutral hues, like beige.
4. Chunky Knit Sweaters
Who doesn't love a good cozy sweater? I'm personally a fan of cropped versions that can be dressed up or dressed down.
5. Leather Pants
Whether you opt for real or faux, leather pants always look chic. I like to have a few different colors in my closet at all times.
6. Pleated Midi Skirts
Pleated skirts can be worn year-round, of course, but in my opinion, they look extra-good paired with a leather trench coat or styled under an oversize sweater. They've become a fall favorite for me.
7. Chunky Loafers
Loafers may be a hot item this season, but they're also a classic that truly never goes out of style. For me, the chunkier they are, the better, but there are plenty of simpler styles out there, too.
8. Black Ankle Boots
Don't get me wrong, I'm a pretty big fan of this season's boot trends—namely the knee-high lug-sole styles we've been seeing just about everywhere. But you really can't go wrong with classic black ankle boots with low heels. Comfortable and easy to walk in, they’re a great everyday staple that instantly elevates any look.
