I Did the Girl Math—These 25 Statement-Making Fall Pieces Just Make Total Sense
I'm already stocked up on basics for fall, so it only makes sense that I start shopping for a few key statement pieces to style them with. In my head, I'm actually increasing the cost per wear of what's in my closet and, thus, being financially and sartorially smart. That's girl math. (If you want a further explanation of the trend, it's simply how Gen Z is justifying purchasing methods.) Whether you're on board with the viral term or not, that's how I'm justifying making a few fun purchases to add some balance to the minimal pieces in my closet. Fall is always my favorite season for fashion, and when you see the market below, you'll agree. Colorful chunky knits, moto-inspired boots, and metallic accessories will have you looking forward to the months ahead.
I'm in no way shaming sticking to the basics in your wardrobe. In fact, most of my closet consists of simple pieces, and I like to invest in a few out-there items throughout the year that are still wearable and versatile when paired with my usual wardrobe staples. After all, a studded belt will just make your white T-shirt and jeans look a lot more put-together. Those red heels you've been nervous to buy? Pair them with an LBD or black trousers—it's going to make sense. Keep scrolling for a shopping list of statement items that you'll reach for plenty when fall comes around.
Oh, Staud, you can do no wrong in my book. I already own it in cream, and it adds so much interest to each look because of the shape. I know the metallic colorway will only elevate a look even more.
If you already own simple flats, having another pair that has an interesting design element like these studs is an easy way to add a little edge to an outfit.
Switch up your usual denim rotation with this under-$100 barrel pair from Free People. Three of my fellow editors own a pair, so they're tried and true.
I was eyeing these for days and finally caved in. I plan on wearing them to NYFW with red tights and then on a more normal day with jeans and a sweater like above.
It's always nice to have a statement sweater in your collection that can be easily paired with jeans, leggings, trousers, etc. It'll act as a little serotonin boost when needed.
Don't be alarmed—sheer skirts are a lot more versatile than you think. Take notes from Miu Miu and style them with knitwear, or wear them like above for a night out.
Snakeskin has never really been "out," so these shoes are a good and reliable printed piece to have in your wardrobe.
I can't decide what's more spectacular—the gorgeous color or the cool tie detail.
I'm going to be tempted to wear this stunning necklace every day.
This bag is always a top seller at Anthropologie, and now that it's available in this striking red, I may have to click purchase soon.
Don't underestimate the power of a great belt, especially one that has a unique design like this one. Game changer.
I couldn't help but include another perfect pair of red shoes. If you're feeling a little more daring, they also come in Barbie pink.
J.Crew has a stellar collection of basics, but even it has added a few trendier items to its site. I mean, just look at these silver loafers. Everyone in the office will be asking you where they're from.
These Charles Keith slides are proof that slip-on shoes don't have to be boring.
All you need with this dress is a pair of knee-high boots, and you'll be ready to head out the door.
I don't think there will be a day when I'm not swooning over an item from Khaite. I can see myself wearing these just as much as my wide-leg Khaite Rapton jeans.
Accessorizing is key, and a giant cuff like this is a quick way to elevate any look. Thanks, J.Crew!
Leave it to Tory Burch to make something as simple as a polo so effortlessly cool. It's a classic silhouette, but the cutouts will have the compliments rolling in.
In case you haven't noticed, metallic accessories are the easiest way to make a statement, even for those of you who lean more toward minimalist fashion. They're not too out-there like a sequin skirt or silver dress and are more versatile in your wardrobe.
Continuing on the "motomami" look from above, this jacket can easily be on heavy rotation when fall weather hits.
I have a similar pair from Tory Burch that's now sold out, and you'd be surprised to know that I'm tempted to wear them every day. They just make every outfit better.
