5 Fall Trends That Are Cooling and the 5 I'm Shopping Instead

I know we still have a few weeks left of warm weather dressing—and as someone who loves summer, I’m not exactly mad about it—but my mind can’t stop racing with fall fashion ideas. I’m so excited about wearing all my favorite fall go-to staples, like great denim and high boots. But this year, I am determined to step it up this fall. I’m challenging myself to make this my most stylish fall yet, and with that comes a little purging from my closet and a lot of research on what’s trending for the season. After digging through runway photos, Instagram photos, and my TikTok For You page, I have nailed down five fall trends to help me have my chicest fall of all time. Of course, I had to share these trends with you, as we’re in this together.

Keep scrolling to see which fall trends I love and which I’m tossing this year.

It’s like a switch goes off every fall, and everyone starts dressing in muted or neutral tones. Not this fall. This color has been all over the runways for all of 2023 but for fall and winter especially. So it’s safe to say fashion people everywhere still love this chic shade of cherry red. From accents to head-to-toe monochromatic red outfits, you’ll see all your most stylish friends and It girls embracing red for fall.

This year is all about looking as rich as possible. Stealth wealth, quiet luxury, whatever you want to call it—it’s the aesthetic of the year, with high-quality luxury basics as the backbone of the trend. From Totem, Khatie, and The Row (to name a few) all clogging my Instagram feed and the closets of all of the most stylish editors I know, if I was a betting person, I would bet that this understated, rich-looking vibe is here to stay for all of fall and winter.

As a lover of all things pretty, I couldn’t be happier about the resurgence of the ballet flat. It wasn’t on my bingo card for trending 2023 shoes, if I’m honest, but now I’m diving in head first because I’m in love. You can’t go anywhere in New York without seeing a stylish pair of ballet flats—some are even calling it a "flat-shoe fall.”

I have always loved a good suit, especially in the fall. Not only do you look professional and polished, but suit sets are easy to style and often work great as separates. I look forward to power dressing every fall. I’m already getting excited thinking of all the suiting opportunities fall 2023 will present.

Mark my words: You’re going to be seeing vest tops everywhere in fall 2023. They have that "back to school” edge without being too costumey, which I personally love. They pair well with almost anything: trousers, denim, and skirts. I have a feeling my go-to fall look will be a vest top, a great midi skirt, and some sort of chic flat shoe.
