My Fashion Crew Said These 7 Items Should Be Dominant in a Solid Fall Wardrobe
My Fashion Crew showcases a group of inspiring tastemakers along with the trends and shopping lists that guide their personal wardrobes.
I routinely turn to various creatives in the industry to uncover fresh styling and shopping ideas. After all, exploring fashion through different sartorial points of view is always alluring. I figured you might be intrigued by what’s currently in the closets of some of those in my inner circle. And given that basics and classic items are the true backbones of a wardrobe, I wanted to learn about the pieces that are true staples for my fashion crew.
Below, you’ll learn more about the participants, along with the specific piece that is dominant in each of their fall offerings. It's essentially these picks that help elevate their assortments. Fun fact: You'll notice that various blazer silhouettes are certainly reigning supreme right now. Oh, and if one of the items sparks interest, you’ll also uncover inspired product recommendations that could take your fall wardrobe to the next level.
Seun Ogunsola: Oversize Blazer
Seun Ogunsola is behind @the_oluwaseun and is the art director at Hausten Creative. She previously worked as a stylist and styling editor at Yoox Net-a-Porter, MyTheresa, and Zalando.
"For me, an oversize blazer is essential for any autumn wardrobe. It's the perfect transitional piece for the minimalist, maximalist, and those of us in between. It can also easily be dressed up or down. I'm currently styling my favorite ACNE Studios blazer with slip dresses and boots while we enjoy the last of the London summer sun."
Caroline Maguire: Knit Polo
Caroline Maguire is the fashion director at Shopbop. Fun fact: The retailer recently launched Shopbop Men.
"A knit polo is a must for the fall/winter season! I love to button up mine to the top (giving more of a polished look), and it pairs perfectly with denim, trousers, skirts, and even layered under cardigans. There are so many ways to upgrade this classic piece."
Janel Molton Hertz: Oversize Cable-Knit Sweater
Janel Molton Hertz is the co-founder and chief brand officer of Dopple, the childrenswear-focused membership service that’s reimagining how parents shop for their kids, from newborns to 14-year-olds. Brands included range from Stella McCartney Kids to Bonpoint to Dôen.
"A cable-knit sweater, like this one from Dôen, is easy and looks good with everything—paired with spandex, ripped old denim, or layered on top of a super-chic dress. It keeps you warm but not boiling. And last but not certainly not least, this one is machine washable—a game changer for this busy mom who hasn't been to a dry cleaner in two years and whose kids never fail to get me dirty."
Emilie Joseph: Classic Blazer
Emilie Joseph is behind @in_fashionwetrust and is an e-commerce manager and Paris-based fashion enthusiast (originally from Guadeloupe).
"A blazer gives you the extra bit of soul and confidence you need to face any situation. It's versatile and extremely chic! If I had to keep only one piece, it would definitely be a black Balmain structured blazer with shoulder pads."
Syed Ahmed: Oversize Sweater
Syed Ahmed is behind @supremetosociety. He told us: "At the beginning of my Instagram journey, I almost felt obliged to keep up to date with certain trends. I felt as if I had to conform to fashion binaries, and I wasn't able to express who I was and my beliefs. I loved what I did, and I still do, but back then I wasn't able to express myself in the way I do now. Fast-forward to the present, I've begun to focus on myself—accepting who I am and being comfortable in wearing what makes me happy, I'm no longer limiting myself to the normality and expectations of social media. Who I am is not something that can be check-listed, and I'm now able to express myself in ways I never felt like I could."
"You can never have too many oversize sweaters during those colder months. I like to layer mine with a T-shirt underneath. For that extra-snug comfort, I'd throw on a coat on top."
Anais Rivera: Structured Bag
Anais Rivera is the senior manager of procurement of Fashionphile, the platform for buying and selling pre-owned, ultra-luxury accessories.
"With restrictions at ease and cities coming back to life, carrying more than just the bare minimum is without question. The Prada Cleo Brushed Calfskin Shoulder Bag is top of mind not only because it is popular amongst our shoppers, but because the structured, hobo-like design makes this piece so enjoyable to wear. And of course, the size is big enough to fit more than just the essentials. It is the perfect companion to take out with you for both work and weekends!"
Aniyah Morinia: Knit Dress With Cutouts
Aniyah Morinia is an editor atBest Knockoff Luxury Clothing and the mastermind behind @aniyahmorinia.
"I've always loved knit dresses for the fall, but this year, I'm really gravitating toward these dresses with a little bit of a twist. From cutouts in the sleeves to cutouts in the neckline, I can always count on these pieces to make any look feel more stylish regardless of the items I decide to pair them with. I plan to style these dresses with knee-high boots for nights out and multicolor sneakers for daytime activities."
Dustin Carrington: Oversize Blazer
Dustin Carrington is the influencer behind @dustincarrington.
"For fall, the elevated basic that I think everyone needs to have in their closet is an oversize blazer. Oversize in general is where I think your fall wardrobe needs to be, but with a blazer, you can layer it over a hoodie and sweats or back to a cool shirt and leather pants, etc. It doubles as an outerwear piece but can also give pretty much any outfit that added bit of edge."
Ariane Goldman: Black Ankle Boots
Ariane Goldman is the founder and CEO of Hatch, the popular maternity brand (yes, the one Meghan Markle has worn) for people before, during, and after pregnancy.
"A black ankle boot goes with my entire fall wardrobe. I'll pair mine with everything from a cropped jean and a white T-shirt to a pencil skirt and a blazer. They also elevate a basic sweater-and-denim combo when I'm going from all-day meetings at work to dinner and drinks with friends. There's a bit of an '80s vibe to ankle boots that I love. High or low heel, suede or leather, you really can't go wrong."
Sky Pollard: Blazer
Sky Pollard is the head of product at Nuuly, the rental subscription service for women's apparel from Urban Outfitters, Inc., offering brands from Agolde to Simonett.
"A blazer can easily and comfortably transform any look into something richer, more layered, and pulled together. I always love a tweedy plaid in fall, but this year, if you want to make even more of a statement, try vegan leather for an edgier look or a floral jacquard for something sweet."
Note that the products below are examples of options that could be added to your Nuuly box.
