This Is the Wealthy-Looking Jacket Fashion People Are Choosing Over Blazers This Autumn
When it comes to coats and outerwear, the British really do it best. Case in point, this one jacket style that's been on the shoulders of stylish dressers for half a century.

From the Cotswolds to Cornwall and every city in between, there's only one coat style that fashion people are reaching for this season—the country jacket. I apologise in advance to my other trusty autumn jackets, like wool blazers or leather bombers, but as soon as the temperature dips, the only shape I'm reaching for is the wealth-whispering, all-weather style that fashion insiders can't stop sporting.
Consider me influenced, but there's just something so enduring and quintessentially British about this chic, casual and very nearly weatherproof silhouette. And if my role as a fashion editor is anything to go by, it's that it's my duty to explain just why this old money hallmark has not only endured so well, but will be more relevant than ever in 2025.
What Is a Country Jacket?
You wouldn’t think there were many similarities between Queen Elizabeth II, Harry Styles and Mrs. Prada. Save for their respective status as fashion icons in their own right, each has their own vastly different personal tastes. However, one commonality that unites them all is their love of the country jacket.
The late monarch’s adoration is arguably the most prevailing endorsement of the trend. When outside the prim interiors of Buckingham Palace and away in residence at the likes of Sandringham Estate or Balmoral Castle, Queen Elizabeth II shed her signature monochromatic skirt suits for more practical pieces that could suit her love of the outdoors.
The waxed country jacket was a crucial part of her off-duty uniform, complementing her Harris Tweed skirts and Hunter Wellington boots as she trodded through the pastoral grounds.
Preferring brands like Barbour and Burberry, the style featured an abundance of pockets and a fuss-free fabric that was equally insulating and logoless. Soon picked up by fellow royals like Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, the simple, albeit protective design, has made country jackets a timeless cut that can be recontextualised in so many ways.
Last year, the style was rendered through Prada’s artful lens after appearing in the Italian luxury brand’s spring/summer collection. Intentionally distressed and intended to look lived-in despite being fresh off the rack, the offering breathed new life into a trend that had once been relegated to Sloan Rangers or Cotswolds regulars.
Now, you need only walk through East London suburbs like Hackney or Stoke Newington to see the wide-reaching impact of the country jacket trend. (Or, if you’re the former One Direction star, the ritzy streets of Mayfair.)
Why Are Country Jackets Trending in 2025?
Of course, in a climate as precarious as the United Kingdom’s, it doesn’t take an expert to realise why country jackets are so rife. Regular downpours and brisk winds influence so much of what we wear, so it’s important to arm ourselves with something that can withstand these temperamental environments. (Even if we’re not far from the comforts of city life.)
It also offers a contrast to the more polished ensembles we’re used to seeing, adding a slight rustic touch when paired with straight-leg denim, polished skirts or pretty dresses.
This is something that Dôen’s beloved country jacket style excels at, especially. Seen here below on Californian-based content creator Caitlin Lois Burnham, pairing a country jacket with a sweet mini can bring a provincial charm that other jacket styles can’t really emulate.
Better still, with its hip-grazing design, a neat pointed collar, and several generously sized pockets, the country jacket trend offers an elegant alternative to raincoats and will save you on dry cleaning your woollen trenches when they inevitably get soaking wet in a downpour. And although its primary purpose is function, country jackets have inherited an expensive-looking quality that makes any outfit they’re teamed with feel expensive.
Joining Prada and Loewe are designer variants from The Row and Toteme, but the high street hosts chic iterations, too, with styles already in hot demand at retailers such as H&M, Free People and COS. Country Jacket Outfit Ideas
Style Notes: Princess Diana's royal wardrobe is a masterclass in quiet power. Ever the fashion stalwart, she's paired her longline country jacket with a pair of pointed-toe pumps.
Style Notes: Like mother, like daughter-in-law. Kate Middleton follows in Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II's footsteps in her country jacket.
Style Notes: Alexa Chung is one of Glastonbury's best dressers, and this combination of a floaty silk dress from Doên with a rugged and practical country jacket proves why juxtaposing elements is a style insider trick.
Style Notes: A balance of timeless and trendy, country jackets look just as chic when layered against other utilitarian styles like jeans and Chelsea boots as they do with other wafty shapes.
