My first winter in New York City changed everything I thought I knew about fashion. After spending my entire life in Southern California, I got to New York and realized my clothes needed to function. I skimped on the important things (coats and jackets), splurged on silly ones (heated gloves that nearly burned my hands), and ended up wearing virtually the same thing every day out of survival. I was broke, naive, and shivering my way around the city in outfits that didn't represent my personal style. Thankfully, this was nearly seven years ago, and I've learned a thing to two about balancing fashion and function. When I saw NET-A-PORTER's latest arrivals, I immediately spotted the pieces that strike this balance perfectly. This fall and winter, there are a few trends I'm looking to wear alongside the utilitarian pieces. Outerwear
There's always a time and place for a puffer jacket, but I'm here to focus on the truly stylish options new collections are presenting. The trick to wearing denim and skirts is to invest in high-quality pieces (and have a pair of tights on hand). These longer jeans are perfect for boots and baggy enough to layer over those handy tights. While it may not be your first choice on a snowy day, the maxi skirt is a chic option for the office or even date night.
Tall Boots
Practically speaking, tall boots are always the smart option in cold weather, but these new styles are proving to be the stylish choice too. Staud's Wally boots are a favorite in our office.
