Graphic Eye Makeup and Big Hair—the Golden Globes Proved the '60s Are Back, Baby
The 80th Golden Globes on Tuesday marked the kickoff to our favorite season: award season. Not only do award shows give us incredible, meme-worthy moments that will be cemented in the cultural zeitgeist for years to come (see also: Jennifer Coolidge saying she’d like to play a dolphin in her next role), but they also give us some of the best style inspirations possible.
Whether it’s the incredible fashion or the tantalizing beauty, red carpet style will always reign supreme. Not only is it fun to look at, but the red carpet also often serves as a harbinger of trends to come.
This year, red carpet beauty made one thing abundantly clear: the '60s are back in a big way. From graphic eye makeup to '60s-inspired hairstyles, we’re pretty sure 2023 will have a major '60s revival. Keep reading for our favorite red carpet beauty looks that drew major inspiration from the decade.
Hello, Twiggy. Jenna Ortega's eye makeup is transporting us back to the '60s thanks to her graphic double wings and defined lower lashes. Her flipped-out bob is also a major nod to the era.
Ortega's hairstylist used:
Hairstylist David Stanwell used this flexible hair spray to keep Ortega's perfect hair flip.
Thanks to the counterculture movement, long, undone hair gained tons of momentum in the 1960s. Anya Taylor-Joy channeled the flower-child hair of the hippie movement with flowing, stick-straight locks.
Taylor-Joy's makeup artist used:
Georgie Eisdell complemented Taylor-Joy's waist-length hair with the ultimate nude lip shade.
Ortega wasn't the only one on the red carpet with Twiggy-inspired makeup. Elizabeth Debicki channeled the star with defined lower lashes and a subtle cat eye. Her tousled, middle-parted hair was the perfect finishing touch.
Debicki's hairstylist used:
Mara Roszak used this anti-frizz balm to prep.
Jennifer Coolidge gave Sharon Tate vibes with cascading curls. The volume at her roots even evokes a classic '60s bouffant, which was one of the decade-defining hairstyles.
Coolidge's hairstylist used:
Hairstylist Janine Thompson used this volumizing hair spray to keep Coolidge's hair in place.
With waist-length hair, a pop of lilac eye shadow, and colossal lashes, Sheryl Lee Ralph's red carpet look was practically a lesson in '60s beauty. If this is a sign that pastel eye colors are coming back, we're here for it.
Lee Ralph's makeup artist used:
Makeup artist Mila Thomas used the shade Aura.
