How to Wash a Wool Sweater
It's likely you own a wool sweater—an essential piece you can wear throughout the cold-weather months. It's cozy, cute, and delicate, the latter also being its downfall, because if laundered incorrectly, it can shrink, or worse, be permanently damaged. But there are ways to prevent any mishaps from happening, and it all comes down to how you wash a wool sweater. Ahead, check out our step-by-step guide to follow the next time you want to wash your wool sweater. It's actually easier than you think, and while it may seem like more work at first, it will save you a lot of stress and trouble in the future.
By Hand:
Always read the care label before you launder your wool sweater. But if you want to go the safe route and avoid any mishaps (shrinking, etc.) that could arise with the washing machine, simply wash it by hand.
1. Fill your sink with lukewarm water
After you've filled the sink with lukewarm water, add in detergent for delicate fabrics and materials. Don't add too much detergent, however, so make sure to check the care label to see the recommended amount.
2. Add in the wool sweater
Place the wool sweater in the lukewarm, soapy water solution. Make sure to soak it completely, using your hands to swish the sweater around in the water to remove excess dirt.
3. Soak it
After you've swished the sweater around in the solution, allow it to soak for 10 minutes or so.
4. Remove it
After you've let the wool sweater soak for 10 minutes, remove it from the sink, and press out any excess water. (Pro tip: Roll the sweater in a towel).
5. Fill the sink with clean water
The next step is to thoroughly rinse the sweater in fresh, lukewarm water. Swish it around in the water to remove excess soap residue, and repeat this step as often as needed.
