Update, December 16, 2020: You can't always get what you want. As excited as everyone seemed to be about the Lizzie McGuire reboot, it looks like the powers that be couldn't make it happen. Hilary Duff just revealed on Instagram that the project, which was first announced back in August 2019, is officially canceled.
Duff cited creative differences over how to portray an "honest and authentic" version of an older Lizzie because it's "what the character deserves." According to Variety, the problems arose from the fact that Duff and her camp wanted a realistically mature show since Lizzie would be in her 30s, but Disney wanted it to remain PG and family-friendly like the original. Here's hoping that the reboot could still happen at some point in the future. In the meantime, I agree with Evan Ross Kratz's tweet, which said: "I'm gonna need a 7-part docu-series about the attempted making of this reboot and where and how things went awry." Originally published on August 23, 2019: If you spent your tweens with Lizzie, Gordo, and Miranda, you're about to squeal with excitement. There may be a lot of television reboots happening these days—hello, The Hills and Gossip Girl—but I happen to believe that this news tops them all. Unlike the aforementioned shows, Lizzie McGuire's number one star, Hilary Duff, is coming back for the new version.
As The Hollywood Reporter revealed, the reboot will follow Lizzie as a 30-something millennial living in New York City. We imagine there might be significantly fewer headbands and bedazzled jeans this time around, but we can't wait to see how Lizzie is doing in 2019. As THR reports, the show will stream on the forthcoming Disney+ streaming service and the show's original creator, Terri Minsky, is coming back to serve as showrunner.
