24 New (But Classic) Basics I Could Live in All Year and Be Happy
If living through a pandemic that’s kept me home for long periods of time over the last two years has taught me anything, it’s that I have a whole new appreciation for basics. It’s not that I don’t love to throw together an exciting, over-the-top ensemble from time to time, but I’ve found myself reaching for easy, elevated, go-with-everything pieces much more often than I used to. In a world where most meetings and interactions are still happening over Zoom, I like having the ability to quickly look put-together without having to try too hard.
Of course, the term "basics” in the year 2022 encapsulates way more than just plain white tees and black blazers. Trendy details like cutouts and ruching and more compelling fits and materials keep things interesting while still falling into the "great for every day” category. Without further ado, ahead are the 24 new classic basics I’m loving right now. From pleated trousers to knit bodysuits, these are the pieces you’ll want to reach for on the daily for seasons to come. Trust me.
A slouchy, oversize bomber jacket adds an instant cool factor to any outfit.
A leather jacket will always be my go-to for chillier days. This dad-style bomber cut feels more current than a classic moto style.
I live in mock-neck sweaters this time of year, and I’m loving the center-seam detail on this one. Plus, the color is so pretty.
This half-zip sweater is great for throwing on when it gets chilly outside.
A good pair of trousers is a staple for every wardrobe that can easily be dressed up or dressed down. The tailoring on this pair is gorgeous, and I’m loving the off-white for spring.
Rib knits are everywhere right now, and a pair of flared pants are a great comfy yet elevated pick when your favorite sweats just won’t do.
The twist detail on this lavender sweater keeps things interesting while still making it oh so easy to wear.
In my opinion, a black blazer is the one staple everyone should own. An oversize fit gives this basic a trendier feel.
I reach for teddy-bear coats year after year, and this slightly oversize fit really ups the cozy factor.
A black, fitted midi dress will always be a solid choice for a night out, no matter the occasion. The curve-hugging silhouette is sexy while still keeping things classy.
Is there anything more effortless than a T-shirt dress? The ruching detail on this one keeps it trendy and allows for easy wearability.
I don’t know about you, but I prefer my denim to be super comfortable. These Reformation jeans have the sweetest relaxed fit, and I love how they look paired with a low kitten heel.
A knit bodysuit is not only a great layering piece, but it’s also perfect for tucking into trousers or lower-rise jeans.
I’ll be buying this one in every color.
A cute knit cami is also great for layering under a tailored blazer or slouchy cardigan.
Cargo joggers may initially read as casual, but pairing them with a blazer and strappy sandals can instantly dress them up.
Here’s another cozy half-zip sweater I’m eyeing. I love that this red isn’t too bright, making it much easier to work into any outfit.
