What I'm Buying to Look Like a Person Who Has Their Act Together in 2024
Do you ever feel like—despite being a fully formed adult over 30 with two kids—you just don’t look grown up? Or is that just me? Whether I’m alone in this boat or not, I’m resolving to change things in 2024—starting with how I dress. While I don’t feel like my style really needs a complete overhaul, as I tend to keep things pretty classic, I do feel like I could step things up in regard to dressing less casual and looking more polished and put together instead. Luckily, my research (or delusion) has led me to believe it’s really not that hard. All you need are nine upgraded basics, most of which you probably already own, and to make some simple swaps in your day-to-day outfits. Think throwing on a knit top instead of a tee or ballet flats instead of sneakers. Sounds easy enough, right? For the full list and, of course, my shopping picks for each, simply keep scrolling.
1. Belts
Whether it's over a jacket, dress, skirt, or with pants, belts give every outfit the finishing touch they need.
2. Tweed jackets
Even if you style it with leggings, it's impossible not to look put together in one of these polished jackets.
3. Pleated skirts
It's taken me too long to recognize that pleated skirts are a winter staple. Whether long or short, style one with tights and pumps or boots and you will look like a stylist dressed you every time.
4. Structured totes
There's just something about transporting one's items in a tote that's neither canvas nor promotional that screams I've made it.
5. Matching separates
Few fashion choices make me feel more confident than a matching set. Plus, they make getting dressed so easy.
6. Slingbacks
I'm so glad the fashion set has chosen to revive interest in this chic and classic shoe style.
7. Knit tops
This can mean anything from a turtleneck to an off-the-shoulder knit to a simple sweater—as long as it's replacing what would otherwise be a basic T-shirt in your outfit.
8. Belted coats
No time to get dressed? Slap on a long, belted coat and no one has to know a thing.
9. Ballet flats
Start wearing ballet flats any time you want to wear sneakers, and your outfits will never be the same again.
