Princess Diana Started This Sporty 2020 Trend—and Celebs Are Still Obsessed
It's no secret that celebrities and designers continue to look to the late Princess Diana for fashion inspiration. Just this week, Harry Styles wore a sheep-adorned sweater that was strikingly similar to one the princess wore in 1983. Hailey Bieber has also not been shy about her love for the royal, re-creating her outfits in both magazine shoots and IRL.
Lately, I've been noticing a ton of striped rugby shirts on celebrities, runways, and e-commerce sites, leading me to believe we have another Diana-inspired moment on our hands. She wore a rugby shirt at the Chelsea Harbour Health Club in 1997, and it's certainly an iconic off-duty royal outfit. Sure, athletes might lay claim to the sporty staple, but has anyone made it look as chic as Diana did? Some could argue that it's a trend that has never really gone away, but when you see just how many celebs have worn it lately, you might be convinced otherwise.
Something to keep in mind: Many of the best rugby shirts are hiding in the men's section, so don't limit your searches or you'll be missing out. Scroll down to see how celebrities and designers are interpreting the rugby shirt trend, and how Princess Diana wore it 22 years ago.

Erin got her start as aBest Knockoff Luxury Clothing intern over 13 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of Associate Director of Fashion News (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
