Even if you're not a germaphobe, you have to admit that bare feet anywhere near filthy city streets is cringeworthy, to say the least. But given that this editor is, indeed, a germaphobe, I'm taking it upon myself to help you find sandals that will protect your feet when pounding the big-city pavement (as opposed to the sandy shores) and still look cool.

While it's hard not to love a pair of white sneakers or ballet flats in the summer, sometimes you just need something that's a little more breathable during the dog days of summer. If you just look out for a few characteristics when city-sandal shopping, your feet and the street will never be too close for comfort. Namely, a sturdy ankle strap (so that your shoes don't fly off of your feet while trekking around town—I've been there and never want to go back), a small platform to keep your feet elevated from the ground, a partially covered toe, thick straps, and/or a large enough insole to avoid foot overhang. Well, I found 18 stylish sandals that pass the city-street test. Shop them below.

So to sum things up, you can and should wear sandals in the city. Just have a few pairs on hand that will protect your feet for when you plan on walking a lot.
