Each season brings plenty of things to get excited about—a change in the weather, upcoming holidays, and a slew of new fashion trends to test-drive. And while I love taking in all the new trends from afar, there are only a handful I can realistically participate in. I've spent years curating a closet of great staple pieces I love, so I try to choose a few trends that truly speak to me to incorporate into my existing wardrobe.

For summer 2024, I've been combing through all the runway shows and major trends to determine which complement my style and existing closet. Now that all the spring/summer collections have hit stores, I've focused on five that I think fit that bill. From the accessory that elevates any outfit to the color trend that's unexpected in the best way, below I'm outlining how to build a summer capsule wardrobe with just a few key 2024 trends.

1. EAST-WEST BAG

You've probably already seen the Alaïa Le Teckel bag all over Instagram, but east-west bags are bubbling up from designers across the board for spring. The wide shape feels directional but practical at the same time, which is a green flag for me when it comes to bags (as a girl with too much stuff). Adding this shape to a chic sundress is my ultimate summer outfit.

2. ELEGANT DRESS

The word that's poised to define this season is elegant—from satin-adorned coats to delicate ballet flats. And while there are tons of pretty items bubbling up this season, it's the sophisticated dress that's stolen my heart. I've been eyeing silhouettes featuring elegant details like hourglass shapes, A-line skirts, and maxi lengths to wear through summer.

3. OXBLOOD RED

If red was the color of 2023, oxblood red is taking its place for 2024. The deeper hue is one not typically associated with summer, but after designers like Gucci, Prada, and Saint Laurent sent models down the runway dripping in rich shades of merlot and black cherry, the fashion world took note. Adding a pop of oxblood makes any outfit feel right on the nose for summer '24 and will carry you right on through fall.

4. BELTS

Statement belts with sculptural metal closures were all over the spring 2024 runways, adorning everything from trousers to dresses, and I'm here for it. The simple addition of a belt makes any outfit feel purposeful, so this an accessory I plan on leaning on all season. Khaite and Saint Laurent are making my dream options right now, but there are gorgeous affordable iterations from brands like Aureum, Heaven Mayhem, and Mango.

5. POINTED-TOE HEELS

Right in line with the elegant theme is the rise of sleek, pointed-toe high-heel mules and slingbacks, whether in leather or in romantic fabrics like satin and suede. This silhouette is my perfect summer shoe, as it can be paired with virtually everything and instantly dresses up an outfit.
