4 Easy Summer Trends Fashion People Will Be Wearing All Through Autumn

We're stepping into the most wonderful time of the year (arguably), and no, I'm not talking about Christmas. I’m talking about autumn and winter fashion—the layers, the coats, the coffee tumblers as outfit accessories—all of it. I kept my eyes eagerly peeled on the incredible street style that debuted last week at Copenhagen Fashion Week, and it for sure satisfied the part of me that missed seeing leather, blazers and chunky Chelsea boots parading the streets. I’m definitely sad to be waving goodbye to our brief (and frankly elusive) summer, but the autumn's fashion prospects are too good to not be at least a little bit excited about.

And although I feel truly in my element just after the summer months, it's admittedly hard to judge which summer items you’ll be hanging up until next year, and which you can put back to work to carry you through the next few months. This year we've seen some unpredictable summer trends emerge (Y2K disc belt, anyone?) alongside all-rounders that have stuck around. So which trends will pass the test during this next seasonal switch-up? Well, fear not. I’ve done my research and picked out four quintessential summer trends that will also blend seamlessly into autumn. Luckily, we won't be packing away our summer rotation in a hurry. 

1. SUMMER LINEN

Style Notes: Linen dominated this summer, with both elegance and practicality at its core. Whilst the climate simply won't allow us to adorn breezy linen throughout all autumn and winter, a linen jumpsuit will give you plenty of layering opportunities, with a subtle nod to summers gone. Style a linen all-in-one with a long sleeved T-shirt, high-neck shirt or jumper to keep you balanced as the weather cools off. Go one step further and bring your linen to the front of your wardrobe next season by pairing it with some pointed-toe or sock-fit boots and a leather bag.

2. CARGOS

Style Notes: Loose, cargo-style trousers are definitely here for the long haul. Offering a casual utilitarian flare to any outfit, we just need them in slightly heavier fabrics such as denim during the colder months. Until it gets really chilly, autumn calls for an understated in-between. Enter, cotton cargos. Not quite light enough for peak July sun yet not too cosy, these are a staple for summer-adjacent looks. Swap out your breezy tee or cropped tank for a jumper and fitted T-shirt, and sub the sandals for some light trainers. Just throw on a long duster or trench and you have yourself the autumn perfect errand-running uniform.

3. BALLET FLATS

Style Notes: It's going to be hard to escape ballet flats very soon. Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no denying that they've managed to sneak their way into every corner of the fashion world. Although I've definitely grabbed a couple of pairs for myself, I'm still not fully on board with the mesh flat-shoe trend. I would hate to see the humble ballet flat disappear as autumn grows close though, especially as they really don't have to.

Flats that prioritise structure—allowing for practicality in the cooler, rainier months—yet still retain their dainty elements are a must-have as we enter autumn. Paired with a perfect pair of jeans and a chic mini trench, this trend surprisingly has the potential to carry us through the transitional months and beyond. Straight, minimalistic shapes are the key to showcasing your flats in autumn. Wear them with a sleek trench and accessorise with delicate textures and a small handbag to complement the lightness of your flats.

4. ROSETTES AND CORSAGES

Style Notes: The sheer fact that this '80s embellishment has re-emerged with such flair this season is almost enough to confirm its timeless quality. Whether it be a cute addition to your outerwear, an elegant choker or a chic touch integrated into a sleek dress, the classic, three-dimensional corsage has a hold on celebrities, bloggers and Gen Z alike.

An ode to a blooming spring and bright summer, I see a lot of room for corsages in the coming months, with opportunities to adopt a black or brown leafy rosette to represent the season. Layer a long-sleeved top under an appliquéd slip dress or attach a corsage to your autumn denim. I'd also suggest wearing the trend with fluid silhouettes such as silk so as not to overshadow the appliqué. Fitted items will also help to make your outfit less bulky and draw all eyes to the rosette.
