Tom Ford Predicts More Parties for Fall

Welcome to Runway Matters, where we're delivering notes straight from the runway so you can quickly digest the most important trends and noteworthy moments from the F/W 18 shows.

It’s the first big show of New York Fashion Week, and the mood is high. As per usual, Tom Ford hosts his event at the Park Avenue Armory. The walls are lit up lilac (so on trend), and the room comes alive with LL Cool J’s “Going Back to Cali.” The front row is bouncing (and I can attest the third row is too), which felt right given that the collection is basically one big party—an ’80s Rodeo Drive party, to be exact.

It’s no secret that Tom Ford adores California, especially Los Angeles. The reference comes through loud and clear with a sequined shirt that spelled out “Beverly Hills.” The sparkles are just one part of Ford’s formula for fall 2018. Other top notes include unapologetic Day-Glo cheetah, touches of zebra print, and fishnet stockings. The designer didn’t host his usual after-party this year, but perhaps this time around, the runway show was a celebration enough of its own. Keep reading for my three biggest takeaways, as well as the rest of the partylicious runway pictures.

The Vibe: Life-of-the-Party Pants

And by pants we mean bejeweled, leopard-print, or metallic leggings. This girl is going fun places! Mostly at night! Can we come too?

The Puffer No One Was Expecting

I can already tell this coat will be very popular. It’s got your likable leopard business on top, and then—BAM—surprise puffer bits on the bottom just to keep things lively. A puffer/furry leopard hybrid is just what Instagram was waiting for. It is my favorite piece of the collection.

The Trend You’ll Get Super Into: Diamanté

Prepare your lobes, feet, hands, and, well, entire body. I’m especially taken with the belt but also here for the shoes and earrings. Fake jewels have never been chicer.

At 57, Julianne Moore is an angel among us. While her all-black outfit is at the opposite end of the spectrum from the runway looks, I appreciate the sophisticated ease of the look. Plus I want her leather joggers.
